Hi all,

This is quite off topic, but i figured that if anybody would be able to answer my question it would be somebody who reads these boards.

I've just bought a terastation 1tb, but I'm having problems setting it up. Windows cant seem to find it, even though the bundled client application shows the right ip address. It's not recognized as a share in windows, so mapping it as a drive is out, and when you try to launch the setup app (which i guess is based on the terastation itself, because it launches internet explorer and tries to go to the ip address of the terastation) it times out and cant find it.

I think the problem may be in that I am using the built in lan port in my pc to access the internet, and then I'm using a new gigbit ethnet pcmcia card to connect to the terastation. Perhaps the pc is only trying to use my original lan socket.

If you know of a better place that I should be asking this question, or even better, if you have a solution for me, it'd be most appreciated.

Don't bother about the Terastation CD - all it does is direct you to the web interface of the NAS.  I suggest you unplug the other ethernet cable, to start with.  Then disable then re-enable the network connection that plugs into your Terastation.  See if you can then ping it.  If you can, then just open a web browser with this IP address.

I have tried doing as you suggested but with no luck. It seems that my computer insists on using my isp connection to try and find the ip address of the terastation. It always prompts me to connect and then gives me the cannot find server error.

I have spoken to a friend who suggested just buying a gigabit hub and putting the terstation and adsl modem through that and just using one of my lan ports. That sounds reasonable to me. Hope it works.

It may sound reasonable, but it's wrong.  Open IE, click Tools, Internet Options, Connections and make sure "Never Dial A Connection" is selected.

Having done this you may need to disable, then re-enable your network connection to find the DHCP server in your terastation.

I think I finally found out what it was. Turning off Outpost firewall did the trick. (I guess that should have been the first thing I tried). After doing that, everything started to work smoothly, and i finally got to start enjoying my new toy...

... for about 5 minutes. Now i have a new problem. After plugging my usb drive into the terastation's usb port, windows has stopped recognizing it when i plug it into a normal usb port. it still shows up when i connect it to the terastation's usb port.

I didnt share it (I couldnt anyway, since it is ntfs formatted). I have tried the "remove usb disk assignment" in the terastation's setup ineterface, but it doesnt help.

This is a huge problem for me, since, being still formatted as ntfs, it is read only when plugged into the terastation. I'd prefer to have it recognized as it used to be; as a plain old usb2.0 drive, and avoid the terastations usb ports like the plague in the future...

Anybody know of a utility that would allow me to do something like this? I really dont want to format the drive and copy 100gb worth of data back onto it again.

I think i've solved my missing usb problem too 
Seems that maybe the usb drive and the network were both mapped to h:, and the network was taking precedence. That or, my network was mapped to h: and so windows wasnt seeing any usb drives after that letter.
Whichever it was, mapping the network share to z: allowed windows to see the usb drive straight away.
