I have been wasting a lot of time encoding video and then starting over. I seem to keep changing what is the best option. I had about 100 DVDs encoded when I decided that I need to use quality based encoding which I wanted all along but didn't know how to use it. I have settled for sure on Q=2. 1 would be great but it would take too much space.

Now I'm very troubled with the issue of interlaced video. In fair use, there are only 4 options:

Native bob deinterlace
Native
IVTC bob deinterlace
IVTC

I cannot figure out which one to use. I think I may go for the plain native mode because at least it doesn't modify the frames at all. When I use IVTC, it gives weird side-effects like flipping edges which flash there and then move up...basically a problem with interlaced video. But plain native gives very bad lines when there is movement. I would think there would be a way to just combine fields 1&2 and then get a full frame!??

I have 8 computers working on this (5 are > recent and pretty fast) but they only get about 10 frames per second max. I have spent many nights encoding and then throwing everything I just did out! I need to get this figured out and 100% decided on.

Please offer any ideas or resources. I'll have a few hours while I re-copy DVDs then I want to get this going and be done with it!

Deinterlacing values varies depending on the source.
Have you tried MeGUI
It will analyse your video and suggests the best options.
I can't help you with fair use, because I have no experience with it.

ivtc is for changing the frame rates

say you have a film that is ntsc29.97 the real data may be at 23.976, but has extra frames incroduced to make it 29.97
these are made up by adding extra frames that are half of one frame, and half of the next frame
ivtc will filter these out to produce a progressive 23.976 video for best results
the trouble is, if it's a real 29.97 video then you'll get a stuttery video

ps I would suggest you take a look at http://www.doom9.org/ and it's forums for any video ripping/encoding problems - full of good advise and help
