The next build should have tagging for jpg image files.  This will let you store (in the file) more or less the same information you can store in an ID3v1 tag in an MP3 file.

We have some questions for you.

Have you used programs that do this?

Do you know of any other standards for image file tagging?

We know about EXIF used by digital camera manufacturers.

Photoshop can also store some information.

Just for a few more details about what we're doing:

Any Media Jukebox data is stored in an APP block, at the front of the JPG.  

There are 16 APP blocks.  EXIF uses 0 and 1.  Photoshop uses 14.  We default to 9, but will use any valid, open block.

Our data is stored in XML. A simple example looks like this:

The MJ block can be easily removed.

The data gets padded, so file rewrites are uncommon.

Great, I've been looking for a program to finally support writing data INTO image files rather than into it's own private little db that becomes irrelivant as soon as the image path changes etc.

This is just what I want for my 3000 or so holliday photos I have on my computer.

This is the info I'd like to be able to store in it:

Country
Location
Year
People in Pic
Who Took Pic
Type of pic (holliday snap, school photo, etc).

But to be honest, If you guys want to get into images alot, something like that that can deal with those images properly and give me some powerful tools for them, is something I'd pay another $25 for and I think most users would. Digital photos either via digital cameras or having pictures developed onto cd are becoming more and more common place.
The problem with stuff like ACDSee though is that it doesn't store it in the images.

Also, the biggest problem is just lack of a big industry standard like with mp3's id3 tags whereby any program can read the data that's entered by another one. If you guys want some real power you should try get a standard going that everyone agree's on then make yours the first program to properly support this.

Also, any chance of being able to customise the toolbar so that it's different in the different filter modes (ie: images only, mixed, audio).

Also, being able to customise the columns and order of the columns for each of these filter modes.
For audio I obviously want track number, year, name, artist etc.
For image I want: resolution, compression, format, size, bits etc.

I tried version 9, and frankly the image features will be of no benefit to me.  Any one who is into digital imaging uses other programs, such as Image Walker.  Now, I'm not saying that adding imaging features isn't a good thing.  It might attract customers who are "on the fence" about a multimedia jukebox app.

I think the image functionality is going the right way. Fast thumbnail creation and organization features. If they are worked over like the once for audio files, I think we can expect marvelous things.

Personally I miss them since I had to install version 8 again (replay gain problem).

I believe Photoshop uses the IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) standard for file info.  Since Photoshop is kind of the standard for image editing, maybe consider using that format.

Image Walker also displays EXIF.  It also lets you save info like captions and keywords that correspond to those fields in Photoshop IPTC file info.  Also, IrfanView (which is a great very popular freeware image viewer) will display (but not edit or save) IPTC and EXIF info if it is present in jpeg files.

Currently, one problem is that both Photoshop and Image Walker destroy the EXIF info when IPTC file info is saved to an image.
