converting library from mc11 to mc 12, what did i do wrong?
« on: October 08, 2006, 10:07:34 am »

i converted my library from mc 11 to 12 just by telling the library manager to use the mc11 library on my d: disk. as far as i understood mc 12 converts the library then. it works and indeed mc 11 is not able to use it anymore.

but the name field says now: "Lila Downs - 01 - Cumbia del Mole" instead of just "Cumbia del Mole". so it includes the artist and the track number. what did i do wrong. and can i repair this problem by just copying the field (name).jmd file from my mc11 backup in the library folder?

I think you have to do a backup from MC11 and a restore in MC12. The MC12 restore will convert the data.  You cannot just point MC12 to MC11 data.

Yes Magic_Randy is right. In MC12 you have to restore from a MC 11 backup, not from the original library folder.

1) If MC11 library is spoiled, restore it from the last MC11 backup
2) Backup MC11 Library again
3) Open MC12 and restore from the backup of MC11 library.

In this way you will have two independently working versions.

Note: If you make tag changes in MC11 and if Otto is on in MC12, MC12 will pick up the changes automatically. But the other way round does not work. If you make changes in MC11 they are not reflected in MC11.

thanks for the replies.

before moving my library to mc12 i did a search for how to convert from 11 to 12. somewere was stated that pointing the mc12 to the library was the same as restoring it.

so i just made the conclusion that i have to do a new conversion, i thought i could as well try the other sugestion i made first, at risk to f up the library even more. so i copied the field (name).jmd file from my mc11 backup in the library folder over the original file. and.... it all is back to normal and seems to work great.

dont understand what went wrong in the first place, but alas.

thanks.

This works fine for me. Usually I restore MC11.1 backups, but I tested this again now.

I copied the MC11.1 database files to a new folder. In MC12 I made a new library and pointed it to that folder. Everything went smoothly. MC12 made a backup and after that converted the database files. All files and view schemes seem to be correct. This library has almost all possible media types and file formats and it contains over 50000 files.

I did and it upgraded the library just fine.  You can't expect to actually USE the upgraded library with MC11.1 anymore though of course!

I didn't finish reading this thread, and I'm not sure why you had trouble with this, but I pointed MC12 at my existing MC11.1 library and it worked just fine.
