Is it possible to upgrade sample rate but not downgrade it?

The reason I am asking this is that I have some files of sample rate as low as 22kHz, some of 44.1kHz, some as high as 96kHz, but my sound card does not support anything lower than 32kHz. I have to set sample rate at 44.1kHz to play those low rate files, that causes all files are played at 44.1kHz, But I want to play those 96kHz files at their native rate. It will be great to have an option to convert sample rate only if it's lower than a certain value.
