Problem with podcasts in recent builds
« on: November 17, 2006, 08:32:17 am »

Hi Folks,

I recently updated MC 12 to build 114 and 115 from build 107 and found out that podcasts failed to play. They were playing fine in build 107.
Each time I try to play a podcast I get the following error message :
The media types of the selected files are not supported for playback (<none>)

Is this a known issue or something wrong on my side ?

UPDATE: If I download the podcasts they play fine once on disk. It only affects online podcasts.

Thanks,

Christian

I am seeing this same problem with all my video podcasts, including ones that are on disk, if they'd been downloaded with the newer builds.

For example, I'm subscribed to the DL.tv video podcast.  I have it set to download the MPEG-4 version automatically.  This podcast comes out 2 times per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  All of the files up through November 9th work fine, and are properly labeled in MC as MP4s and Video files.  Starting with the podcast of November 14th, it is incorrectly labeled File Type = MP3 and Media Type = Unknown and they won't play (generating an unsupported media type error).  Same goes for the Diggnation XviD (AVI) feed.  I have it set to download automatically (one per week I believe).  The one from November 4th is fine, but the one from November 12th is incorrectly marked as MP3 and Audio (instead of Unknown here) and won't play right.

Also, I have DL.tv's H264 (MOV) and DivX (DivX container) feeds added but set to manual download.  If I try to play one of these that hasn't been downloaded, I get an error dialog (shouldn't this just download the file?).  These also show MP3 and Unknown incorrectly.  I tried manually changing one of these files (a DivX one) to AVI and Video and playing it.  MC then hard-locked and had to be killed in task manager (that might have been due to the DivX container though -- I assumed they were AVIs until I just realized my mistake now -- still shouldn't hard-lock though).  Manually changing the tags on one of the already downloaded files (the MPEG-4 feed) worked and allowed me to play it.

Deleting and re-adding the podcast feed seems to have fixed the incorrectly recognized media type for the H264 feed, but has not for the DivX feed (which still lists MP3 and Unknown for all of them).

More info... In investigating the Diggnation (XviD AVI) feed mentioned above.  The one that is incorrectly labeled (2006-11-12) actually sort-of plays.  The audio plays when you try to play it, but there is periodic distortion and "noises".  I'd assume this sort of works because the audio track inside it is actually MP3 (and the noises are due to the interleaving with the video).

I also did a Locate --> External.  Interestingly enough, the file is actually labeled as a MP3 on disk as well.  Renaming this file in Explorer to AVI does not fix it.  G-Spot detects the file as XviD video, but lists errors in the file (128 unneeded bytes at the end of the file).  MS "test" fails to build a graph (it gives a hex error code and says unknown) and MPC fails to play it.

Fixing the tags in MC also does not allow MC to play the file, though it does not generate an error and just goes on to the next file.

Re-adding the DL.tv DivX feed in MC12.0.116 did not fix the problem (they're all labeled MP3 and Unknown).  When I re-added the feed earlier, it was after I had rolled back to an earlier build.  More info soon...

Rolling back to build 112 and then deleting and re-adding the DL.tv DivX feed fixed the tagging issues.  I would assume if I go back to build 116 and any new podcasts came out on the feed that they'd be broken though.

I don't know if any of the builds between 112 and 116 would work.  I haven't been able to test it that systematically yet though.  Perhaps later...

Either way, suffice to say that MC's handling of Video Podcasts is all messed up in the builds of MC from this week.  I'd guess it has something to do with MC's detection of what file types they are.  I suspect the problem with the Diggnation AVI was that MC thought it was a MP3 file and tried to write tags into the file (perhaps when I tried to play it), which messed it all up (hence the extra bytes at the end of the file).

I am having the same exact problem.  I already posted about it in the ...116 thread.  Wasn't sure if I should re-post it here, but thought I would mention that I am also having the issue.

Hi,

Just tried with 116 and it's the same. Podcasts only play when they are downloaded ! They still trigger the same error when played online.

I tried deleting then adding the feed back without any success.

Could someone post a feed URL we could test with that shows the problem?

Thanks.

I got you covered...

DL.tv MPEG-4 Feed: http://rssnewsapps.ziffdavis.com/audioblogs/DLTV.mp4.xml
DL.tv DivX Feed: http://rssnewsapps.ziffdavis.com/audioblogs/DLTV.xvid.xml
DL.tv H264 Feed: http://rssnewsapps.ziffdavis.com/audioblogs/DLTV.H.264.xml

Diggnation Large XviD Feed: http://revision3.com/diggnation/feed/xvid-large
notMTV Large XviD Feed: http://revision3.com/notmtv/feed/xvid-large

I also noticed that while it still works, Democracy Now's feed is being recognized as Media Type = Unknown.  It's just a MP3 feed.

Democracy Now MP3 Feed: http://www.democracynow.org/podcast.xml

Rocketboom's "Main Feed" is a 3ivx MOV file with AAC audio.  It's being recognized as MOV but the Media Type is Unknown.  Haven't tried playing one yet.

Rocketboom fixes itself once the files are downloaded and recognizes them as Video.  Playback is fine.

Here's another one that's a video podcast but is recognized as mp3 and unknown.  Playback fails.

Washington Post Video Podcast: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/mmedia/vipod.xml

I should note... Almost all of the video podcasts that I've found that do still work are those formatted to work on iPods (M4V files and MOV files mostly).  Two examples of these are PBS Nova and CNN Daily.

Also, the MPEG-4 DL.tv feed listed above does still kinda work.  It is recognized as MPEG now, instead of MP4 (which it used to be recognized as), but it does playback just fine.  The H264 feed of the same podcast also works okay, but the DivX one is all messed up, as are most of the other AVI-based ones I've tried.

Fixed next build.  The new media-type specific MIME type table wasn't loading properly, causing this and a few other problems.

Thanks for the help.

It doesn't seem to be fixed for me with build 117 unfortunately...

I haven't spent a huge amount of time playing with it but already-downloaded ones are still broken, and even when I delete and re-add the feed (even giving it a different name) I'm still getting my DL.tv (DivX) feed recognized as MP3 and Unknown.  Still refusing to play.

EDIT:  Yeah... Played more.  This doesn't seem to have made any difference at all on my system.  Problem is identical to before.  I'm also having a lot of trouble getting MC to "forget" about old broken Podcasts.  When I delete them (including deleting the files out of the library) it still seems to know about them, because when I add them back, they still match what they did before I delete them.

EDIT Again: Well ... Some things are actually fixed.  My "Democracy Now" problem mentioned above is fixed.  But that was minor as the files actually played before (albeit without being able to use G-Force with them).

Most of the Video-related problems are same as before though...

Baby steps.

I think everything will be back to normal with the next build.

I'm sure you'll get it.  Thanks for the work!   ;D

BTW -- to everyone else.  If you haven't used any of MC's Podcasting features, especially for Video Podcasts, you should really check it out!  I didn't really find myself watching video podcasts much until I started using MC to handle them.  If you have a HTPC system that you use for video anyway, it's spectacular!  Almost just like having them on TiVO.  They just "show up" when they're ready and they're in the list of things for you to be able to watch.

There's really already a lot of good content out there, and more new stuff all the time!  The only thing I'd really like is a "repository and review site" where you can go to find new podcasts to watch.  I guess iTunes has something like that, but I don't have that installed on any of my Windows machines (services blech!).

Anyone know of a good, non-biased place where you can go to find new Audio and Video podcasts?  Preferably a place that has them categorized by topic and rated or reviewed (perhaps by users somehow)?

Hi Matt,

Thanks a lot. It is now working here with build 117.

Best,

This seems fixed for me as well with tonight's build (118).  I'll test more tomorrow to confirm.

Tonight, I've got cleaning to do for the company coming on Thursday.  Ugh!   >:(
