Problems with skipping during playback
« on: November 19, 2006, 12:31:15 pm »

Is anyone having problems with skipping during playback? Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm using 12.0.115.

Maybe it's related to plug-ins.  The only ones I have are:
1) G-Force
2) SofSkies
3) WhiteCap
4) DFX Audio Analyzer for J River version 8.019
5) Data Master
6) Lyrics Editor

I get the skipping even when I'm not using the visualization plug-ins (1-3)
I have Data Master set to not work in background - so that can't be it.
I'm having skipping when I'm not working on lyrics, so it should not be Lyrics Editor.

Try increasing playback buffering a little in options. (or switching between WaveOut, DirectSound, etc.)

Also, hardware issues can often cause pops.  Recently I realized AMD Cool-n-Quiet was getting me.

I know that there have been some slow startup issues with Doof's Lyrics Editor (which he has now fixed but I'm not sure he posted a new build yet).  Have you tried disabling that one and seeing what happens?

Also, on a somewhat related note...

It would be really nice if MC had an easy way to start up in "safe mode", disabling all extra plugins and skins and whatnot, for testing like this.  As it is if it crashes it gives you the option to disable those things, but then those changes "stick".  What I'd like is to have a simple command line option (and start menu icon) that would give you those same options, but have it only last until you close and restart MC.  That way I'd actually use it to test for problems (and recommend it to others).

I'm pretty sure my problem is related to the DFX Audio Analyzer for J River version 8.019.  When I shut this one down, I could not make the skipping come back.

I'm playing now with he buffers to see if that fixes the problem.  So far so good - oops it's skipping while I'm typing.  I have the buffering set at .75 seconds, I'll try making it longer.

Matt,

Looks like the problem was with the DFX Audio Analyzer for J River version 8.019.

I increased the buffering, step by step, until the problem went away.  It looks like ~2 seconds is required.  I don't know if that is a high number or low number, but that is waht is required to get this plug-in to work.

Thanks for your help. ;D

This will be my last post on this subject in the MC12 forum, this is not an MC 12 issue.  If I have further problems I will post it in the plug-in forum.

The problem is definitely with the DFX Audio Analyzer for J River version 8.019 plug-in.  I increased the  buffer to ~2 seconds.  That helped but did not eliminate the problem.

I next changed the output to WaveOutput and set the buffering back to the default of .5 seconds.  So far it appears to be working.  Unlike the buffering, I'm not sure what this option does, but it does appear to fix the skipping problem.

Again, thanks for your help Matt.
