DirectShow Filters and MP4 files
« on: January 05, 2007, 09:41:09 pm »

I was excited to see themuch improved handling of direct show filter selection for video playback.  However, when I tried to select my Nero filters (which show all up properly on the menu of supported filters) to play back my mp4 movies(encoded in H264 AVC) i noticed that MC12 simply ignores these filters and keeps asking me to install Quicktime - which I will of course never do in my lifetime :-))

Any idea why this happens and why MC12 does not recognise my Nero filters for playback?

Thanks

have you selected when you play a mp4 file under directshow filters? You must selected under other filters nero digital audio decoder, Nero mp4 splitter and nero video decoder.

Hope that helps.... you can also use cccp with Haali Mp4 splitter

Under "Source Filter" I have selected "Nero File Source" and under "Other Filters" I have selected the three Filters you suggest.

But it just keeps asking me to download Quicktime....

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks !!

Did you actually check the check box for mp4? Regardless of what filters you select for it, you must first tell MC to play mp4 in DirectShow.

mp4 is the only type that does not get the checkbox checked by default.

For diagnostic purpose, try select different decoder and splitter filters if you have any.

Done some more testing. I have another machine which has ffdshow and haali installed. There MC12 just uses those filters. Even if i select Nero filters it doesnt use them!!  Almost sounds as if MC12 simply ignores whatever you tell it to use as filters and defaults to ffdshow - if its installed - and if not, asks for Quicktime.

In general, DirectShow uses a user selected filter whenever it can. It ignores a user selection only if such selection is not usable. Therefore if MC asks for QT, or uses FFDShow, it indicates DirectShow has trouble using the filters you selected.

This is not the first time someone reports Nero filters not working. What version of Nero filters are you using? Are there updates available?

That's for sure.  Nero apparently changed something quite seriously with Nero7.  Nero6's filters work just fine...  I haven't taken the Nero7 plunge yet, but it's actually on order now.  I mostly just want to see what all the fuss is about, and work'll pay for it so...

For me Nero 7 worked, after I played around with the settings --- without quicktime installed.

But.... I can search for the exact settings, maybe that helps
