Windows codecs (.acm & .ax)
« on: December 28, 2006, 03:06:16 pm »

Hello,
is MJ (8.0.400) a DirectShow application?
Could the installation of "better" codecs even improve MJ's playback audio quality?
Welcome any reply.

Matt  has always said MJ and MC are bit perfect

since MJ is like 4-5 years old it may have problems with Some cd burners, but should play fine

Using or testing there newer product would be better

Well,
I really think MJ is the best (.mp3) player out of there [#2 Pinnacle Steinberg MyMp3PRO (discontinued), #3 Quintessential Media Player, #4 dBpowerAmp Audio Player... in my (very) personal ranking].
I'm a "seasoned" audiophile: quality, the first!
And if I can improve audio quality...
Is MJ (8.0.400) a DirectShow application or in playback mode it only uses its own MPEG Audio Layer-3 decoder (how I suppose)?

Thank you

actually I think MC handles a higher samples per second than MJ.

There are more people who follow this more than me around here, i am not too anal about music so i am not a true "audiophile" dude. besides that I can hardly hear the difference between a 32kbps file and a 320kbps file.

I put contacts in my eyes about 10 Min's ago for the very first time ever (everything is a bit blurry right now) or i would search this information out (difference in quality between MC and MJ). Maybe someone who knows will chime in or maybe when i can see straight in the next day i will try to search for the information for you.

So I am going deaf, can't see, and maybe next to go is my voice or adult diapers (no fetish implied).

MJ and MC use an internal MPEG audio decoder. MJ's decoder was found to be "Excellent" already in this test: http://mp3decoders.mp3-tech.org/decoders_mjb.html - over six years ago (the tests were performed 2000-2001). Audio quality has always been fine in MJ and MC, though MC has many fixes for decoding MP3 files that are more or less nonstandard or slightly corrupted.

Video playback has used DirectShow in MC for a long time. In addition MC11.1 and MC12 beta can use DirectShow with for new audio file formats that are not yet supported internally. MC12 beta has excellent new configuration options for DirectShow filters.

I guess you mean deaf.

(Death will eventually come too, but dead people do not need diapers...)   ;)

I hope someone will make a plugin for direct brain connection before we become too deaf. Hearing through ears would not be needed anymore. We would just have a socket in the back of our heads for direct connection with MC (in Matrix style) or perhaps even a wireless connection.  :)

Thank you so much.

That test relates to MJ 5.0.601 and Fraunhofer ACM Codec ©1999 (l3codecx.acm - 1.9.0.401): "the decoding quality of Media Jukebox is excellent. It installs the ACM 1999 codec, but appears to use a different (accurate) internal decoder instead".
Really latest version of MJ installs any Fhg ACM codec, but effectively its internal decoder is still great!

USB4 or firewire 1600

Imagine how good that would be, no need for a DAC 's
just a direct data stream, much less loss of quality.
Of course you would want gold plated cables, with oxidized copper.
