A quiet week-end in Lake Woebegone
« on: August 30, 2002, 04:09:29 pm »

For our many friends who live in countries other than the United States, I'd like to say that this is a long holiday weekend here in the U.S.  It's Labor Day.  I don't know exactly why it's called that, but I've never heard a good explanation for why December 26th is called "Boxing Day" in the U.K.

What this means is that things will be slow on the forum until Tuesday morning, when we will once again snap to attention and salute you.

Have a good weekend, no matter what the length!

The way I understand it, Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, is when you box up all of your leftover food from the big Christmas party and any useful items that you either don't want or have been replaced and deliver it to those less fortunate than yourself. Practiced in the UK and Canada. Maybe Australia but I don't know. I may be wrong on all counts.
I haven't a clue what Labor Day is for. It doesn't seem to be labor.
I take the day off, anyway. How long do you think it will be before Sept. 11 is made a holiday? Maybe it will replace Labor Day being as nobody knows what it's for anyway.

I hope that September 11 is a day we all work as never before.

I'd like to see the World Trade Center go up exactly as built before.

Neither will probably happen.

Anyway, I hope we will keep doing the crazy, cowboy stuff Americans are known for.  This place has flaws, but it is a wonderful place to be.
