file conversion... I can't get it to work.
« on: February 07, 2007, 02:50:41 pm »

Hi

I have seen in that there has been a file convertor for a fair-few versions... Great.

I have even used this a couple of times, but each time I have come across the same issue, I thought it was an issue with my understanding, I have now spent a bit more time on this and I still have the same issue.

When I try to add files that are 320 Oggs and try to copy them to a device that only supports mp3 I convert to 128 mp3, so the file size will less than half, now the problem is that the system, even when only trying to send a few files tells me that I am sending more files than the device can store...

now if I have a 512MB device, and I am trying to copy 1GB of music onto it, it says I am 500MB over, once I have deleted 500MB from the queue, it says I am 200MB over.... well, even the original files would fit, ignoring the space savings that I should see from the re-coding process...

has anyone else seen this? any known issues or workarounds?

Thanks in advance

I can't reproduce this.

I just plugged in a 1 GB memory card.

I picked CBR MP3 at 128 in Options > Handheld > Conversion

Then I dropped APE files on the card.  It held a lot more than 1 GB of APE files this way.

Any other hints?  Could you be configuring a different device in Options > Handheld? (look at the device picking combobox at the top)

Can anyone else reproduce this?

Also, is it possible your device is actually full of other stuff (data, etc.) that MC isn't showing?

Hi,

So I created a new device called memorystick and assigned it to f:\

Under Conversion I have:
Simultaneously Conversions = 2
Audio:
 - Mode: Convert if necessary
 - Encode MP3
 - Encoder settings - default except for VBR quality = normal

The stick is 512MB
drop 1GB of 320kbps OGG files onto the device
click transfer

tells me its 345MB over.

delete 399.1MB from the queue and press transfer, then MC says the device now says it is 148.3MB over

delete 158.3MB from the queue and press transfer then MC says the device is 69.7MB over

delete 82.4MB from the queue and press transfer then MC says the device is 27.4MB over

delete 48.9MB from the queue and press transfer then MC says the device is 2.5MB over

delete MB from the queue and press transfer then MC says the device is 2.5MB over

when try to get back to the MC to delete more get (for teh first time, so could be an anomoly, MC has had to close, send error report to MS? which i sent.

Is there anything else I can send to help with tracking this down?

Rich

Could you try CBR MP3 at 128 to rule out the problem being bad VBR estimates?

Also, can anyone else reproduce this?

We'll try some more tomorrow as well.  Thanks.

Bump.

If I add files one at a time, then remove them in reverse order, the available space is a perfect mirror as you would expect.

Again, try CBR since the problem could be in the VBR size estimate.

Any other clues?

nope, with cbr/abr at 128kbps then ticked restrict to CBR, still get the same thing, the status bar has always correctly tells me available space on the drive, but when I click transfer button I still get this issue.

what else do you wnat me to try.

I'm looking at the available space reported in the handheld action window.

Are you looking at the same thing, or something different?

the only time this becomes a problem is when you actually press the button that says "Transfer" in the action window.

I get to this by the following manner.

I create a device in tools->options->handheld saying it supports mp3

now a new deivce appears under drives and devices

I find music and click+drag onto the device listed in the left hand pane. Now the "drop files here" icon appears and to the left the transfer button. I can add as much as I like, but I am useless and never get the right amount dropped on.

Click transfer, it says its way over.
click on the device in the drives&devices and it lists the queued files. delete enough (based on message) and click transfer and it still says I'm over... and round and round we go.

I have a 512MB stick and until I get to less than 200MB of oggs dropped on it doesn't start the conversion and transfer. But then the oggs are going to be converted to 128kbps from 320kpbs, so there is even more room...

Does that help you reproduce it?

Rich

p.s. I had the same problem before when using smart playlists for syncing with mc11.1
