Album Artist (auto) - How is this derived?
« on: February 22, 2007, 11:33:25 am »

Please take a look at this screenshot:

How come my Album Artist (auto) pane is showing "Unknown Artist" when the artist portion of the tag is indeed populated with an Artist name?

I have a total of about 100,000 tracks, and I have come across quite a few cases where the name in the Album Artist (auto) pane does not match what is listed in the tag itself for the Artist.

Also, what does the "auto" part mean?  Why doesn't MC just use the info from the tag itself?

Thanks!

EDIT:  It would appear that this board reduces images, so here's a direct link to the above screenshot:

Thanks, that was it!

So should I do a "Select All" of all my tracks and do a Library Tools/Update Tags (from library) to fix this for all my files?

The field is filled automatically depending on the other tags and how the files are organized. These links have more info:

No, you should check the links and understand how the "Album Artist (auto)" field works. After that you can determine how to fix the problem.

I would like to add that if you have not intentionally added any "Album Artist" field values you can easily fix the problem by selecting all files and removing the values. After that the "Album Artist (auto)" field will display the artist the name unless the album is a multiple artists album. In that case the auto value will be (Multiple Artists).

You should try this first with a few files and make a library backup before proceeding. (File > Library > Backup Library...)
