MC 12 130 making Vista grind to a halt - hysterical memory usage
« on: December 14, 2006, 01:41:01 pm »

Asus M6VA Pentium M 2.0 notebook with a Windows Vista "grace period" tryout of Vista Business, nothing installed but drivers and MC. At once MC starts with 150 K memory usage, then it falls to 6-8 K for a while, and when it's fully up and running (after a minute or two) it's using around 270 K. In the meantime the screen goes blak and white a few times, and nothing else is possible to do. I have an ATI x700 graphics card with Vista's included drivers. Fully standard installation (clicked on express, something I never do on a computer I'm gonna use for anything later), no library at all, no extra plug-ins, just resting on the start page. After a while it settles on a few K, but clicking anything makes the memory usage go up to 270 K again. Doesn't really sound right, does it?  ;) ;D But playback works...even when I install the DirectX host plug-in and use my favourite RGC High Frequency Stimulator.

OK, this seems to have been a fluke, since a second install of Vista, this time Enterprise, didn't give me that problem. But the screen goes white when I change from one view to another (which takes a bit of time on 80 K plus tracks). This is with the standard Vista theme, not Aero. Shouldn't MC show something, so people don't think it has crashed?

I think you mean MB not K.
If MC was using just 80K that would be impressive  :)

Running Media Center 12 in compatibility with Windows XP fixed all my problems. It runs now at 9,000K instead of 270,000K.

You shouldn't have to do that.  MC works well with Vista.  Make sure you have the latest build from the top of this board.
