Data CD: burn one/crash, restart/burn one/crash...
« on: August 25, 2002, 04:26:33 pm »

I think the subject says it all but...

I'm trying to archive my music files (I shudder at the thot of a HD crash).

I set a filter to find files that have not been archived, select a CD full of complete albums (usually works out to 90%  ), update the custom2 tag to "Data CDxxx" and burn the CD.

When I try to repeat the process MJ crashes.  Restart MJ burn one more CD and crash.  This is really frustrating.

I will reboot and try pre-tagging a bunch of files then trying burning by setting a filter "custom2=CDxxx" and see if there is any change.

Maybe this will help.  After rebooting I was going to try pre-tagging a large number of files but I invoked the Burner just to check out how close I was pushing the CD capacity.  I was over so I selected a smaller group of files and re-invoked the burner to check capacity but MJ crashed with:

General protection fault MMSYSTEM.DLL at 0006:000000d0

Rebooted and tried again with the same result trying to re-voke the burner causes MJ to crash.

Slightly OT:
Could you please fix MJ so that all its modules report the same capacity.  When I selected the files in the RH pane, the status bar reported 709.784MB, the Burner reported 672.8MB.

At what exact point does it crash?
Does it make a difference if you select (or unselect) the generic driver on the cd writer options page?
These are data CD's you're burning, correct?
Do you have the "eject CD after burning" option selected?
Just for the heck of it, try disabling CDDB lookup.

JohnT -

Thanks.  I didn't realize there'd been an update to the 336 release.  So I'm going to install that and see if the problem is fixed.  No point to beating a dead horse, heh?

Take care

JohnT -

Sorry, no joy.
>At what exact point does it crash?
As soon as I click OK in the dialog to choose which type of burn I want to do.

>Does it make a difference if you select (or unselect) the generic driver on the cd writer options page?
No, after installing the latest version I enabled the use generic driver option.  Only impact was I had to rename most of my files because of the 64 character limit in the generic driver.

>These are data CD's you're burning, correct?
Yes.

>Do you have the "eject CD after burning" option selected?
I used to have this option checked but I unchecked it and still it crashes.

>Just for the heck of it, try disabling CDDB lookup.
It never was enabled, I use freedb and cdplayer.ini.  I don't know how many CDs I filled out info for in the old days and then these suckers want to cop a copyright on other peoples work.  No way!

Anyway, just to reiterate.  The crash happens regardless of whether there was a prior burn.  The last time I exited the burner to rename some files, when I returned to the initial Burn type dialog and hit OK MJ blew up.
