YADB.COM
« on: August 23, 2002, 11:37:58 am »

Here's a new service from JRiver.  Now, or in a few hours, you should be able to use this link:

http://www.yadb.com

Here's what you will see there:

"YADB.COM hosts a database of CD tracks. It is similar to Gracenote's CDDB, but it is based on the freedb database. The software that runs it was written and is copyrighted by JRiver.

"At this time, there is no web interface, and the database is only accessible via Media Jukebox.

"Like CDDB, you can add to the database as well as look up CD's.

"More later."

....

YADB is our solution to the hassles we've had with CDDB.

If you have an existing account set up with CDDB, you should be able to switch back to it if you want to -- under settings/options.

We hope you'll bear with us while we work the wrinkles out of the new system.  In the long run, it should allow us a lot more flexibility in what we can provide you.

Yet Another Data Base?

You're Always Discussing / Drinking / Downing Beer?

Young Anarchists Dial Bush?

Yodelling Australians Display Bravado?

MusicMatch Sucks Chunks (in the little used language of Gnrhg from Ulan Bator's (Mongolia's capital) Upper East Side)?

OK. I need to go lay down...

I think YADB needs some art work

how about a CD-Rom rolling in from the side, after it crosses the area, 2 men walk out and pickup and pull on a rope and Pull up the "YADB"

"YADB" then expands To

"Yet Another Database On Steroids"

The Beastmaster mentions something like this with startling regularity.

Response: So what's your point?

(If she ever reads this I'm dead)

Also - Enjoying an IPA from the Goose Island Beer Company as I type...Would really like to try a Scronch version soon. Road trip?

Hi Zevele,

Yes, it's final, but I wouldn't enter a lot just yet, wait a week or so until some bugs have had a chance to get worked out. Enter a few and check and see if they work.

If you have any with non-ascii characters, that'd be a great test.

Gateley

You mean no latin letters?
Like israeli records?

I am sure the answer is yes,but better to ask.

Let me know what you would like me to do.

Enter the record in the data
Delete the data on my computer and try 'update from'
Convert
Tell me ,i would do it and let you know the results

Will this system have an option to use a local DB ?? FreeDB can be downloaded and I am currently not ripping my albums (and I have a stack to go) as I am having connection hell being back on dialup...

Even at the 108MB download a local DB and updating it (10MB or so) once a month or going online for the few that are missed is a great option if your ripping machine is not online or you are on dialup...

You update it to the FreeDB database and each month I download in bulk the update file at around 10MB...

This is one benefit of FreeDB in that they dont seek to control it like CDDB... If you look EAC has the option to use a local FreeDB database...

This is very handy for non broadband or even non networked computers...

Providing it for download?  At this point, we don't know what we'll do next.

We need to make sure it's rock solid in its current state before anything else.

Jim, If that was in response to my comments then I dont need you to provide it for download... The FreeDB database is already provided along with updaters etc (and would be a major hosting bandwidth issue I would think) all that is needed is for the application to be able to look at a local DB instead of connect to a remote DB via the server...

If you have a look at EAC (you must have a copy somewhere :-) right) this is one of the nice things about it... I have it set to look at a local DB for FreeDB... Sure I had to go out to a net cafe with the laptop to get that 120 MB file but once I have it then my ripping machine can be non net connected and still tag....

PP,
An earlier version of MJ did support both cddb and freedb protocols, so it would be possible to do local support.  It's just not a high priority at the moment.

I take it my DPLII idea is less popular than I figured it to be huh :( !!

DPLII?

Right now we're scrambling to meet an important deadline, so we may not be paying enough attention to outside suggestions.  This should change sometime in September.

Did you (and Matt) not get my emails ?? Thats odd as my SMTP server may be giving me false positive reports (bad) !!!

Essentially I thought it was a wicked idea and should be pretty easy to implement via directshow and using the WinDVD 4Plus filter... This way MJ does not get involved in any Dolby licencing hassles and anyone with WinDVD installed can get a DPL II decode...

I even did the leg work for you if you check the info in here

http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/interact//NeoBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=inter&Post=13108

You will see this is a possible filtergraph combination with Graphedit... Connecting the WavOut renderer to the WinDVD filtergraph looks possible... It would only need that functionality exposed in MJ (or via a plug in if you thought there were legal issues) to allow the connections...

Sorry for dragging this OT but I really liked the idea and thought you guys had seen it but thought I was being part of that lunatic fringe again... Sorry for continually throwing these oddball ideas at you but DPLII is sweet and this would be another killer feature...

Good morning Zevele and PhatPhreddy,

Zevele - yes: non-latin is what I mean. And your test sounds perfect (entering, deleting, and updating).

PhatPhreddy - I haven't even thought about making the database available for download. It is NOT in freedb format, I use a real database (postgreSQL - though any should work). It's currently 1/2 gigabyte which is quite a download. Freedb is even larger - 2GB, not the 120MB you mentioned (and when unpacked, it is between 4 and 8). Are these too large?

for those with a dial up connection that would be way too much, but for those of us with a broadband connection that would be a simple matter of a little over an hour, or more, depending on the size. So it wouldnt be too bad. An overnight d/l perhaps.

I dont know if we are talking about different things then..

I downloaded the FreeDB in RAR format from the FreeDB mirrors as listed on the FreeDB website and it was 108 MB... This however gave me decompression errors and after trying all the reccomended RAR tools I DL'ed the 128 MB one...

This is all from FreeDB.org as listed on thier downloads pages here

http://freedb.org/modules.php?name=Sections&sop=viewarticle&artid=12

The August update was posted on the 11th and changes the total DB size to 134 for tar.biz2 and 113 for RAR the updaters to bring the previous release to this spec were only about 9MB in windows formats...

Are we talking about the same FreeDB perhaps ?

messages crossed...

I see it as useful but not essential and totally understand the priority / deadline concerns...

To be honest a single file rip would be a more welcome feature anyway (like EAC can do) and auto APE / APL conversion...

PhatPhreddy,

MJ can do this. Or are you referring to the select and rip of EAC (single track) vs. having to go thru unchecking songs in MJ?

Really ?? (again sorry to drag this off topic) I like to keep my albums as single file rips, currently I use EAC to make WAV / CUE files and Monkeys to compress to APE / APL combo's (I think I can make EAC do this automatically but I have not sussed how)... I prefer this for rebuilding of albums and the fact that it seems to prevent those mystery clicks I used to get on track changes...

My MJ ripping experiments always broke albums down into tracks inside folders... I could configure the folders and formatting but I nevver found a way to do single file rips...

So what setting am I missing ??

how do you submit a cd?
Look like no window to fill pop-up

look like the same problem than with cddb 2-NOT 1- is here

Phish  The Story OF The Ghost:
you get 3 times the reference
and there is also 'The Story of The ghost'
Look like 4 matches for one cd
Any way to clean up the mess?

To submit, just make your changes in MJ and then right click on the CD.

We can add functionality over time.  The important thing right now is stability.

I'm closing this thread and starting a new one.
