Same Covert Art for Genre & Artist
« on: March 10, 2007, 10:50:16 pm »

Hi,

Is there a way I can make the same cover art appear for a particular Genre and Artist in Theater View and the non-Pane view (with setting show Thumbnail)? I find that the icon associated with each genre/artist changes so much (everytime!) that no right association is ever built up in the user's mind between a picture and genre/artist and I have to look at the text anyways to figure out what is the Genre/Artist. Having the consistent picture show up every time will build up an association in the user's mind of a Genre/Artist with a Picture - which is what Album Thumbnails are useful for.

thanks,
Osho

Funny you should mention this, I was thinking the contrary the other day. MC seems to cycle through the the same cover art; the same order is used every time. So I usually see the same album covers in Genre and don't make it too far down the line.

It would be useful to be able set one image to define some field like Genre, but not all users would want this. If you toggled off a "Cover Art lock", I would hope MC could implement a random cover art picture sequence; it just gets boring seeing the same albums in the same order over & over.

Well, if you have stacks view enabled then I see what you are saying. But if you don't have stacks view enabled (and in theater view, stacks view is not even available for good reasons) then I think having a consistent picture for the Genre/Artist makes a lot of sense.

I find it to be completely random, though of course in the genres where I only have several albums, for instance say, Country, it'll be pretty familiar every time (either Johnny Cash or Alison Krauss).

It might be nice, like Osho says, to have a constant image of your choice to represent your genres. There could even be standard genre images (changeable of course) that come with the product. I agree that seeing the cover of a random album in your collection doesn't necessarily direct you to the correct genre.

(and in theater view, stacks view is not even available for good reasons)

I have stacks in Theater View, not sure what you mean?

By the way Osho, in answer to your original question, as far as I know there's no current way to do this.

Strange, my cover art cycles in order by Artist Album (Auto).

I went into the Files view and change that #1 column to be Name and now they are random.

I don't see what stacks has to do with it. I was simply getting tired of seeing the same few albums represented as genre. Leaving Name as the #1 header gets random cover art; cool.

Yes I have stacks in Theater View but if I move my mouse over them I don't see the albums change as in the regular non-Pane view. That's what I meant. I really would not like to even see the stacks in Theater View but I haven't been able to figure out how to get rid of them in Theater View.

That is pretty strange behaviour, kudos for thinking of that as the cause. #1 column on most of my views is also Name.

Just thought I'd throw in my voice in support of adding this option.

It would be great to be able to choose an image that never changes for the album thumbnail shown on the genres pane (you could also implement it for the Artist pane, as it might be useful there as well for some).

In the end forming that mind association to facilitate visual search is important for some of us.

Of course, you should also keep the option to have them random as it is currently implemented for those that prefer that.

It would be a nice option. Now I tend to leave the text under Tiles in Genre & Style but remove it for viewing albums. I know I'm not as serious as others about use of Genre and sub-categories though. I try to keep Genre uber-general i.e. Country, Blues, Rock, Jamaican.

This concept would really pay off for use with Artist type view schemes. I use a custom artist field to weed out all the minor Artists that get on my library through my excessive amount of compilation albums. In that view especially (which I retain for rare viewing or tagging purposes), all I see is a mess of the same album covers. My custom album artists scheme would really shine with this feature as it wouldn't be that overwhelming to tag; 675 Album Artist [Custom] tiles vs. 4068 Artist tiles.

This would be a big step forward and applied like changing the pic of a folder in Windows; associated a field entry with a template picture?
