Good recent movies?
« on: August 20, 2002, 02:27:23 pm »

Hi - My wife and I recently saw both Signs and My Big Fat Greek Wedding at the movies.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - it was really very funny and watchable all the way through. It seems to be a sleeper hit - gaining box office and top 10 places each week. If you're looking for a good "date night movie" then this would be it IMHO.

I found Signs pretty scary in a Hitchcock manner. The acting was good and setup excellent.

We also watched Mulholland Drive on DVD (Netflix) last week but I don't know if I enjoyed it or not - I'm that confused. If there any opinions / speculation from others about what the plot is all about by those that have seen it (and those that haven't because believe me, you have as much idea as me and She Who Must Be Obayed) then please share.

Any other recommendations?

Gatobrit,
Il postino was good.  From netflix, I think.

All Creatures Great and Small is available from Netflix.  Heartwarming stories about a UK vet.

Such a Long Journey -- from Netflix.

Why aren't you in the south of France?  We'd better have some pictures.

Good question! Well, we're not actually due to leave until next Friday (30th). My digital camera is charged, ready and has a 256Mb compact flash card waiting to be pressed into service. So, yes there will be pictures. :-)

After a pretty exhausting year, especially for my wife who has just today completed (giving) 3,000 hours of counseling (she will become a Marriage Family Therapist after gaining her Masters 2 years ago) and is therefore ready to begin studying for her CA board examinations in the fall, we are ready for a vacation.

Here's the link to the place we'll be spending our first week...

Maybe A Contest To See Where JimH Will Take His Next Vacation.

Or maybe take him Down To the Bus Station, And Give Him To An Old Lady To Take With Her On His Trip With Instructions that She Is To Pass Him On To Someone Else And See If He Gets To His Destination.

I Think Maybe the Congo for the Next Vacation, With JimH in A Picture with Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My

MBFGW was hilarious.  Saw it twice.  I usually don't like romantic comedies, but this one is on it's way to be my favorite movie of the year.

Signs was good, but I always leave M. Night Shyamalan's movies feeling a little dissatisfied somehow.  I think I like the concepts of his movies better than the actual execution.

I liked The Bourne Identity, even though it was a little predictable and the book is one of my all-time favorites.

Minority Report the good the first time, but when I saw it again, not so much.  I actually liked A.I. much better.

joe mama - I liked Minority Report much better than A.I. I think the "world" created in MR seemed to be believable and the story worked well. I will not go to the optometerist quite as easily next time that's for certain.

A.I. - I felt manipulated watching it and although I usually like Spielberg movies I didn't like this one.

Didn't see Bource Identity but it's on the list.

I went off on a (long) rant recently on AVS about the current state of the filmakers art... Perhaps its just more releases and simple dilution of the waters but I am finding movies worth repeat viewings so much harder to come by...

I have had my best HT moments with..

Laurance of Arabia
Apocolypse now (still not sure if Redux is better)
Raging Bull
Paton

I was too young to see these in the cinema and there is no point comapring a 4:3 viewing of Lawence to the scope version (that omar entrance spectacular)... Having spent a lot of time in the N Sahara with the Berber and Bedu tribes this was really an experince for me... Made me buy the 7 pillars also...

Has there been anything in the last decade to compare to any of the above ?? I have not seen it...

The best movie I have seen since "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is "Amelie".
Pick up the DVD; you won't be disappointed!

I just saw boondock saints via netflix, why didn't that movie do better?  I've never heard of it till someone told me to watch it a week ago.  Everyone who I find who has seen it said they loved it, but not many have seen it :/  doesn't make sense hehe.

Signs was okay, while watching it I thought it was a good movie, and soon as it ended I was like "err wait"  and felt let down.  It wasn't the ending that was a letdown, it was sorta the entire movie, just didn't realize it till it was over.

Austinpowers3 was great, I laughed pretty hard during some parts and I normaly don't laugh.  If you're older you'll see lots of references to stuff in the 60s and whatever.

Um... just watched Rat Race yesterday...  was funny for bout 1/4 of the movie and then got stupider and stupider... and then it continued to outdo itself all the way to the end increasingly getting more retarded.

Laws of Gravity with Edie Falco. Not high art and not brand new, but honest, well-made, terrific acting.

PhatPhreddy:

The Unbearable Lightness of Being with Daniel Day-Lewis, Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche. IMO, a great film. Opening scene is hilarious, but ultimately a very sad movie. Besides, I'd watch a Depens commercial if it starred those two women.

Directed by Philip Kaufman, who also did the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, another terrific movie.
