Determining Virtual Memory Usage in Win2k3?
« on: October 23, 2007, 06:37:35 am »

I'm trying to determine if a server could do with more memory.
We're having performance problems with it and I'm investigating.
Someones suggested it could be a memory shortage,
but I'm getting myself confused.
The server has 2gb of physical memory.

The Peak Commit Charge is 2073324 KB.
Total Commit charge is sitting around the 1700000 mark.
Does this mean that we'd be throwing money away?
There's a lot of conflicting advice out there.
Cheers
Chris.

Chris,
I've used the Perfmon counter for page faults before as a good indicator of how much VM is being swapped in and out of the page file.
Using the Prformace tool
Check under "Memory - Page Faults/Sec"
If that number is high you need more memory. Mine is ticking over at under 100 / sec
If it's in the 1000's and polishing your disks :-)

Total server memory is 2GB
Commit Peak is 1.2GB

Currently running 2003 Standard SP2 with Exchange (standard) 2003.

From your numbers you are getting to the point of needing some. It all comes down to how responsive you need the system to be.
