Question about converting format? (ripping)
« on: August 13, 2002, 07:06:07 pm »

When going from say 96kbps mp3 to 128kbps, why does the music sound like the chipmonks are singing? The speed of the music is faster??? What's up with this? I download at lower kbps so that it downloads faster, then convert them to a higher kbps later. Any and all help is appreciated.

I'm, not sure why why MP3's sound like the chipmonks but as I understand it there is no advantage to converting from 96 to 128, all you end up with is a larger file size. If you want quality sound you need to download at as higher bitrate as you can.

Re-encoding a 96kbps MP3 to 128kbps wil not improve the sound quality.  In fact, it will most likely degrade the sound quality and all you will end up with is bad sounding MP3s that take up more hard drive space than the original ones that you downloaded.
