Minor issues with mkv/dvd backup playback
« on: December 08, 2007, 01:44:47 pm »

Hello All,

Time for more questions for the smart people here.  Here are the steps I have done right now.
- Install a clean XP Pro
- Installed CCP Codec package
- Installed JRiver MC 12
- Installed a sound card with sp/dif output

I further have configured the ffdshow settings so that the dolby digital/dts audio is just passed through to the sp/dif for my receiver to decode.  I made know changes for ffdshow video settings.

When I try to playback a x264 hd show in a mkv container, the the video and audio is off slightly(it is noticeable).  When I play back using Media Player Classic/WM Player there are no issues whatsoever.  The synchronization is perfect.

I further adjusted the direct show settings in MC to use Windows Media playback or something to that effect.  Once I did that things are perfect, MC plays back the mkv containers beautifully without any sync problems.  Can some body explain why there is this discrepency, and further how can I resolve this and get MC to just play the mkv containers by itself without any assistance from MSFT WM player.

Further I am noticing the same problem with one of my dvd's which I have backed up to the pc.  Do I need windvd or something else installed in my pc to get this to work?

I am able to display stuff at 1920x1080 and it looks and sounds gorgeous :-).

Not sure.... Could you give more details on the MKV files?  What format are they in (audio and video streams)?  How were they created?

And, can you post a tiny example encode (maybe one of the trailers or a short snippet from a DVD) via RapidShare?

As a workaround until the heart of the issue is addressed:

AC3Filter has a slider for correcting audio/video asynchrony. As long as the asynchrony isn't varying with time (indicative of a continuous framerate problem, perhaps), AC3Filter should be able to correct the problem.

I don't use ffdshow audio decoder any more, so apologies if it also has a synch correction utility.

FFDSHOW does as well, but it shouldn't be a problem I don't think (though I'm not sure because I don't use S/PDIF output)...  If MPC and ZoomPlayer work, then MC should be able to as well.  They are just pre-setting some option that MC isn't.

I can not think of a good reason why there would be a problem, if MPC works. It is however remotely possible that JRiver bitrate monitor could be causing it as that is the thing that other players would not have. Please try turning off "JRiver Bitrate Monitor".
