Stupid questions
« on: February 03, 2008, 09:37:38 pm »

Ok, 1st I've got a Sony KV-36HS20, older HD set that does 1080i.  Will it work with an HTPC and how would I figure out what resolution to use?

I'd like to be able to run a line from my HD cable box to the pc and be able to hook up a external HD ant.  Is there a card that will do this?
Thanks

I do not have experience with the kind of set up you are asking about. I would guess you need an HDTV TV card to capture the signal from your cable box. You can then output from your PC to your TV set.

Sorry this is not much help.

It should work fine.  What inputs does it have?  HDMI/DVI?  You can use a converter cable.

I built two identical HTPCs recently and they have a motherboard with onboard (built in):
S-Video
Component
VGA
DVI
HDMI

Analog Stereo
Analog Surround
Digital Optical
(maybe even digital coaxial somewhere)

So they will work with virtually any TV (SD or HD)

Thanks for the input.  Best input on the tv is component.  I can't find any info in the manual or online about resolution.  Any idea how to figure that out?  Thanks again.

Is it plasma?  I'd say it's probably 720p.  Is it LCD and very new?  Is it larger than 44"?  Probably 1080p.

Of course there are those pesky resolution breakdowns that annoy me to no end.  Why can't it just be exactly what the HD resolution is?  NO...they have to add some pixels.

If component is one of your input choices, go with the best - 1920x1080. Now, some CRTs will complain about such high resolutions so you'll just have to give it a go. You may also be limited in what you can achieve depending on your video card type and drivers etc. Failing this, start small and with the common PC ones (800x600, 1024x768, etc) and take it from there.
