Blue Screen Of Death with External USB DVD Drive
« on: July 06, 2008, 08:55:52 am »

For a while I have had a problem whereby Media Centre 12 use to hang if asked to browse whilst my external DVD drive was plugged in. I could normally shut down Media Centre with Task Manager and carry on.

Since the last update I get the BSoD immediately after Media Centre has loaded if the drive is plugged in.

I also get BSoD if I attempt to burn even if I wait until after Media Centre 12 has loaded before connecting the DVD drive.

No other programs seem to have any problem (including MC11).

Here is the system info (with USB drive not connected):

A blue screen of death is a hardware problem.  MC is just searching for portable devices.  It sounds like, when it gets to the USB drive, something goes wrong.  You could try updating drivers.

As I said the drive seemed to work perfectly with other programs.

However I have been going through every program I have that writes to cd/dvd and have found similar symptoms with Nero Essentials, so it looks to be a driver problem and not specific to MC12.

Thanks for the prompt response.

You might try uninstalling Nero Essentials and rebooting.
