How to normalize when transferring to a portable?
« on: September 07, 2008, 12:51:49 pm »

I'm trying to transfer songs from my PC where they are encoded as FLAC to my portable (MP3 VBR). For my portable, I want everything to be normalized to 100% (which I don't do when I rip to FLAC, since I want to preserve the original, and besides it's easy to adjust gain on my PC).

There is no option I can see to do this, which seems too obvious an omission (not present either on the "Covert Format" Tool), so I'm sure I'm missing something. Can anyone help?

If it is truly missing, I would (a) suggest that it be added to the Covert Format options and (b) ask if there is a Lame command line option to do the same thing?

MC includes iPod Soundcheck info and ID3v2 Replay Gain tags (only in MP3) when it syncs portables. This is done automatically if the source files are analyzed.

However, the playback correction works only on iPods (Soundcheck) and on portables that can read Replay Gain tags (practically only on "Rockboxed" portables, http://www.rockbox.org/).

It would nice if a possibility to use DSP (including Replay Gain) would be available in all features that use file conversion. Currently it is possible to apply DSP only during audio CD burning. Technically it would be possible whenever the source file is decoded to PCM before re-encoding. Though, this would not help in a situation when some of the files are already in the target format, unless the user is willing to re-encode all files despite a possibly audible quality loss.

I have explained my workaround in this post: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=48026.msg329431#msg329431
