Help running MC 13 over my home network
« on: December 12, 2008, 09:58:11 am »

I have a laptop and desktop at my home and have MC installed on my desktop. I have an iPhone so I have to use iTunes on my laptop. However, I would like to still use MC on my laptop by running the .exe from my desktop on my laptop. Are there any problems I may encounter before I do this? It should still be using the same library and any edits I make should be saved to the library regradless if I make them on the desktop, or on the laptop while running the executable of fthe desktop, correct?

I think you need to use Library Server, but you could start here in the Wiki:

I'm slightly confused, probably because I'm stoopid... ;) Do you mean that you will share the installation directory on your desktop and run it that way? If you do, you may have a problem because libraries and stuff are saved in a hidden directory under your userame on the computer. I have solved a similar thing (many computers, one library) by sharing the music directories, doing a backup of the library to a shared directory after having done the editing and then restore that new library backup to all the other computers. Would that be a viable solution for you?

Okay here's my setup

Desktop
C Drive (Windows install, MC 13 here)
D Drive (Data storage)
E Drive (DVDRW Drive)

Laptop
C Drive (Windows install, iTunes here, but no MC)
D Drive (Data storage)
E Drive (DVD Drive)
F Drive (External Hard Drive, with all my music; When plugged in to either the desktop or laptop it is assigned F:)
G Drive (The desktop's C Drive, mapped)

I want to be sitting at my laptop and run my Desktop's MC install without ever installing it on the physical drives in the laptop (because MC/iTunes aren't exactly friendly with one another).

Hope that clears it up...?

Yeah, and it seems even more impossible to me. It looks like your only chance would be using some kind of remote control software. With a possible exception for doing a portable installation of MC to the F drive, to use that on both computers. I haven't tried that myself, but you may be able to get that to work.

You could try running remote desktop, or VNC on your laptop to directly control your desktop machine.

That's about the only way I can think of that you'd be able to do it, too...

Yeah, that's what I meant with this:

I have MC13 installed on a dedicated computer on my home theater system running RealVNC server software.  I can control the home theater computer from any other computer in my house including my iTouch iPod (or iPhone if you had one) also running vnc softare.  Both the iTouch and home theater VNC software is free.. Works perfectly.
