Problem with Archos 5
« on: December 14, 2008, 07:14:38 am »

Syncing MC13 with my new Archos 5 produces funny results.

- when sorted by years, all pre-1970 file appear under 1970;
- some albums or songs won't appear in the Archos library. When searching the Archos through its file structure, these files are here. They are in the Archos, but not in its library file. NB. All these files are MP3 files. I haven't found any particular difference between those and other MP3 files which behave normally.
- when syncing, MC13 sometimes does funny things. For instance, it deleted all my files on the Archos yesterday (I had switched from "all audio" to a playlist containing all audio files to see if it could fix the previous issue).

I cannot say whether the issue is in MC13 or on the Archos, but Archos users don't seem to experience the same sort of issues, so it must be a compatibility problem between Archos and MC13.

Please, can you have a look at it?

Problem more or less solved, and it had nothing to do with MC13, apparently.
The Archos library is not completely reliable.
Sorry for the false accusation!

I'll answer to myself one more time.

If you have an Archos 5, one thing you should do is uncheck "Resync if date modified has changed". It seems that the Archos internal library somehow changes this info more or less systematically, so it always wants to resync everything. And that can be a problem if you only want to sync a dozen files but it wants to sync about 15 000.

Now, one thing that would be really nice would be to make the "recheck sync" a lot faster with the Archos. Now, with about 15000 files to check, it takes about 10 minutes. I have no idea whether that can be done on JRiver side, I'm just saying it would be very nice.

How satisfied are you with your Archos 5?
Which file formats are you using it with?
Which purposes ? Audio, Video, ... ?
OVerall usability together with MC13?

Asking because I also looked at the Archos, but read a lot about buggy firmware...

How did you finally get the library to recognize all of your songs?

I'm an archos owner and this has been a real problem for many users.

If you figured out how to get the library to work, please let me know.  You'd make a lot of people very happy!!!

THANKS!!!

Sorry, I've been away for a few weeks.

Not too satisfied, actually. It has a lot of features and a lot of bugs, some of them frankly problematic.
File formats: MP3 and some audiobook files (M4a?) for the sound files. Video files: I don't know. Some work, some don't.
Purposes: actually, I just wanted a gadget. I have an iPod and it is generally of a more practical use. I'll find out how to use it once I have solved the problems.
Usability with MC13: better than with WMP. MC13 allows for very specific manipulations, and that is useful with a capricious object like the Archos.

First of all, I thought the problem was solved but it was not entirely.
There were two problems: the date problem (all pre-1970 songs are under "1970"), which is not solved at all now; and the invisibility problem (songs visible in the HD structure but not in the Archos library).
As for the second problem, I had to re-encode the songs which did not show up in the library.

The difficult part was to figure out which songs had to be re-encoded. I had found a way through the MC13 sync panel, but I don't really remember what it was exactly, sorry. Basically, I selected some songs in the sync panel, having sorted it by status.
In any case, I thought I had solved the problem this way but I was apparently wrong. Si I finally deleted everything from the Archos and told MC13 to convert all the songs (from MP3 to MP3) during sync. That should take time (it being done right now). I'll see if that works - and the songs will only be re-encoded on the Archos, not on the PC.
