Try those same files (they are mp3s, right?) without conversion.

What's the netgear saying when it's trying to play?

Choose plugins in the tree (on the left of the MC screen), and then UPnP Server. On the right, above the status message, there is an options button.

Are you sure the files are playable? Try playing them in Media Center to make sure.

Have you gotten any files to play?

Rip a CD to MP3 using the default encoder settings, see if those play.

it works perfectly with the software that came with the netgear but i would perfer to use mc 11 as its a far superia program, mc11 finds the mp101 and lists all the mp3 but won,t play them

Upgrade your firmware, it's pretty old.

Matt found this article saying it's possible to use with Vista:

[Warning -- we haven't tested this]

Please report any results.

That's good to hear.  While I'm not using Vista on my server, I do remember the unfortunate days when I dealt with this problem.  I wonder if it affects Server 2008...which I may upgrade to down the road.
