MJ 8 WAV File Cut Off Problem
« on: July 04, 2002, 02:51:50 pm »

(Windows ME, Soundblaster Live)

I have just upgraded from a trial copy of MJ7 to a trial copy of MJ8. I now find that when I try to play a collection of short .wav files (movie soundbytes etc) that many (but not all) of the clips are cut off before reaching the end. For example all I get is "Good Morning V" instead of "Good Morning Vietnam!". All these files played without any problems on MJ7 and also play on windows Media Player 7 without problems.

Can anyone help, I have tried tweaking some options settings without success. I don't understand why MJ8 should appear to be less capable than MJ7 in this respect.

Bumpity bump in response to JimH's email...

Settings are...
Between Tracks:Standard, Gap 1.0s, Seeking: Standard, Stop:Immediate, Output Mode: Wave Out(Default), Bitdepth: 16-Bit(recommended)
Wave Out Settings...
Device: Wave mapper(recommended), Performance: slider at mid point

The wav files are 11.0 kHz and 16.0kHz, 8 bit, 1 ch

I have tried changing the settings without success (e.g. Bitdepth: Source bitdepth etc etc).

MJ seems to skip down my smartlist of such .wav files, sometimes it plays the full clip but mostly it skips onto the next clip before finishing so I get "My mother always used to say, life is like a box of chocolates - you @*!?" and I don't get "...never know what you're going to get". I created the smartlist when I was running MJ7.

Is this a bug, MJ7 could handle these files without a problem ?

Would it be too much trouble to zip up 2 or 3 of the files and send them to matt @ jriver.com (without the spaces)

Thanks a lot for your patience... hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this quickly.

I had this exact same problem about 6 months to a year ago.  The problem then was that the wave files were mono.  You've indicated "1 ch", so I'm almost sure that the problem again lies with short mono files.  I don't know the details of switching the playback engine from stereo to mono to stereo quickly, but the more I thought about it, the more it sounded like a bad idea.  So I batch converted all of my movie and television quotes to stereo wave, and then batch converted those to mp3.  It really didn't take very long at all.  No problems since then.  (Yes, mono waves should work, but I found this easier in the long run.)
