Install wizard has performed illegal operation..
« on: June 29, 2002, 02:33:36 pm »

well, I've tried emptying the temp files, changing my monitor settings, downloading to save, downloading direct and updating my video card and all I get are illegal operation, general fault protection warnings during wizard loading. Ive tried posting a "help please" message to no avail.  I would have to say that this type of support system is a little hit or miss. Definately not working for me. I have downloaded and purchased enough programs to know how to do it and that it can work on this machine.   From all discriptions MJ sound like a program I would like to get to know and purchase the plus version but this just isn't working. I give up, soo long

I had the same thing happen.  I was having probs with the installer crashing and emptied the IE temp files.  It worked ok for a while, then, it was back.  I emptied the temp files again to no availe.  I was getting ready to post it here again, but right before writing the post I figured I'd give er one more try to make sure I had all the correct info, and it loaded!  Go figure!
I think we are dealing with the proverbial "TV and the repairman" syndrom.
I have no idea what got it back up and running again, but it is.

I emptied the ie temp files exactly as that thread said.  tools/options etc.  It did seem to help the other thing that was happening (i.e. low system resources) disappear, but the general fault protection/  illegal operation never waivered.  I'm not so sure about the idea of reloading windows.  Is that a big deal? Do you have to uninstall it first and back up everything?  And why does this illegal operation  occure only with this wizard? I have no other system symptons. I appreciate your help

Ernest,
The only reason I had reloaded windows was because I had just installed a new HD and had loaded windows to it.  I reloaded windows after the MJ install problem assuming that something was wrong with the first install.  After reloading windows, MJ installer worked fine.  Unfortunately, all my windows preferences were reset and I had to reinstall some other drivers (video, ect...).  I don't think that it was the reinstall persay that enabled the MJ installer to function again, it prabably worked because the reinstall cleared the IE Temp folder.  I haven't nailed down exactly what is causing the MJ install problem as clearing the Temp folder worked once, but not the second time. At least untill a little later after the dump.  I have noticed that this installer problem does only occure with the MJ install.

Thanks for the help Chico and Jim.  I often get caught up in trying to solve these mysteries just for the fun of it(and usually is a simple, but significant mistake), but in this case I really would like to give MJ a try. I listen to record and store lots of lectures and some music and am changing some analog stuff to easier and more permanent formats.
I originally thought that this problem I am having, with this install, would be fairly common since I have no other "unique" problems with this machine, but I guessed wrong...  If anyone thinks of some other Ideas I'm all ears...

Ernest,
Your welcome, but sorry we haven't been able to find the problem yet.  Are you running on Windows 98?   This problem seems to be exclusive to that at this point.  Try installing MJ after a cold boot, and while logged onto the net, or with no other programs running in the background (ctrl |PLS| alt |PLS| Del, shut down everything but Explorer).  If you find something that works, please post it here or in Jims thread about IE problems.

Yes I am running 98with up to date service pack and patches.  I will try closing everything except IE. I wasn't sure which of those programs could be safely closed.  And a cold boot is just a whole new start, like the beginning of the day? If I get this to work you will be the first to know. Well second.

I did close all the programs under control, alt, delete. I was pleased to not see any smoke but the illegal operation general fault problem persists. e

This is a strange problem.  About a year ago we had a problem with video cards in higher resolution settings, and this sounds similar.

A long shot, but it's all I can offer, try setting your video resolution to something low -- say 800x600 and 16 colors and then installing.

I assume you have tried downloading a new file, on the theory that the download itself may be corrupt.

HI Jim, I tried lowering the video resolution( below the ones you recommended) according to some ancient thread I found.  It didn't help, I also tried updating my video card but not much new was available for my nVidia 8m card. I did two downloads one to save and one open from site. I also had the same problem with a couple of download tries on MJ7. No difference.  Other music programs don't build in conflicts do they, as I have a few on trial and other basis.  That's all from this end.  e
