I'm building a new machine for a friend...
Intel D850MVSE motherboard, P4 2.2Ghz, 512mb, W2K Server SP2
Plextor "CD-R  PX-W2410A" IDE Burner, Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm drives

I installed MJ 8.0.315 directly and bought him a license as a "system warming" present.

BUT...I can't uncheck the "generic" box for the burner.  I know it's on the Goldenhawk list because I checked before I bought the drive.  It's set to DAE enabled and Ultra DMA mode and the MJ install installed ASPI 4.71 and an aspichck confirms it's OK.  I can rip at full speeds and except for the 2 second gap and missing CD-TEXT, I can burn OK.

So, after trying various re-installs to no avail, I decided to put the Plextor drive in my own machine which is also running 8.0.315, and...  MJ recognizes the drive as supported and I can check and uncheck the "generic" and "gap" boxes.

Now I'm scratching me head so I put my Sony "CD-RW CRX175A" (which works perfectly in my machine) into the new machine and...  the "generic" box is permanently checked.  Sigh.

I've tried backing the ASPI layer to 4.70 since that's what my machine has: no luck.

I've tried wiping MJ and installing v7.latest: the "generic" box CAN be changed, but upgrading to 8.0.293 sends me back to permanent generic.  (I went from 7 to 8.0.293 because that's what I did on my machine).  Further upgrade to 8.0.315 didn't help.

I've tried reinstalling the IDE drivers, checking the cables, moving from primary master to secondary master (the hard drives are on their own ATA/133 controller), updating the motherboard BIOS, etc, etc.  No help.

The OS was installed last night on a fresh hard drive and MJ was the only non OS software to be installed.

I'm stumped.  Anyone have any other ideas?

Remy

I'm not the expert on this subject.  JohnT at jriver is.  But I believe he has said to try searching for all the winaspi files on the machine and renaming them to tmp files, then installing ASPI according to our FAQ.

On the Goldenhawk site, there is a link to a site that had a lot of info about ASPI.  My conclusion was that ASPI is not always ASPI.

Thanks Jim.  Yeah, I saw the ASPI links.  Did a manual uninstall and clean of ASPI, an uninstall and clean of MJ, then a reinstall of 4.70 from the Adaptec distribution and a fresh MJ 8.0.315 install.  No help.

Maybe JohnT can send me his test program on Monday.

MJ 8 wouldn't recognize my NEC 7900 CDRW until I removed the wnaspi32.dll from Adaptec (4.70) and replaced it from the one available on Nero's download page. Now it works fine and you can uncheck the generic driver. Maybe worth a try.

Thanks for the tip RAVMAN.

I replaced the WNASPI32.DLL file as you suggested and while I can now check and uncheck the "generic" button, this version SERIOUSLY compromises digital audio extraction.  MJ, even in Digital Secure mode, won't rip without clicks, pops and skips on a brand new CD.  EAC won't even complete a rip as it spends all its time doing error correction.

Even the dumb Windows CD Player won't play a CD without problems.

So, it's back to square one for now.

Thanks anyway...Remy

OK, I'm going to absolve MJ of any responsibility for this problem (although I reserve the right to change my mind later ), but I'm still stumped...

Using the Nero ASPI DLL, I can play with the "generic" setting.

BUT I get serious DAE corruption with any ASPI version when the CD drive is the only drive connected to either of the IDE channels.  If I connect another CD to the secondary IDE channel, both work fine. With only 1 drive, whether primary master or secondary master, whether it's the Plextor or the Sony, I get the skips.

I'd swear I saw someone else report this same situation but I can't seem to find the post.  Sound familiar to anyone?

On the "devices settings" page, make sure the drive "type" field is set to "IDE". Then the Aspi stuff should make no difference in ripping, as it's not used. This is assuming the CD drives are IDE and not SCSI.

Thanks John.  The drive types ARE set to IDE but I can swap the WNASPI32.DLL back and forth from the Nero version to the standard  version included in the Adaptec distribution (rebooting each time) and the checkbox is only available when the Nero DLL is active.

If I understood correctly, you said that when you had the Nero wnaspi32.dll activated, the burning worked fine but the ripping was messed up. But when the Adaptec wnaspi32.dll was activated, the burning didn't work (couldn't uncheck "generic") but the ripping was fine. This is really strange because MJ's ripper doesn't even access wnaspi32.dll if the drive type is set to IDE.

One thing to try is do an MJ uninstall and tell it to remove all registry entries. Then reinstall. Make the Adaptec wnaspi32.dll file the only one in system32, then reboot.

If that doesn't work, drop me an email.
