Author Topic: Library Server use case: Managing files (import, tag, etc) on the server  (Read 1917 times)

Basically, my goal is to be able to manage the library (import, tag, move files, etc.) from my office PC while making sure that these changes are seamlessly updated to my quasi headless HTPC.

I'm currently just using a shared library where the HTPC accesses the shared lib in read only mode. When I've made changes to the library on the office PC, I need to restart the HTPC so that the changes are reflected on it.

The reason why I'm not using the library server is that I cannot see any way to update the client (or server, I've tried both ways around).

For example, if I set up my HTPC as the server, I cannot import new files on the client. Neither are files Imported on the HTPC reflected on the client office pc since there is no way to update the client(s) libraries *from* the client.

Does anyone have any advise on how they've done this? Is this a common use case wrt. client/server setups in MC?

This is basically what I am doing now (substitute "server" for HTPC) but I'm considering adding TV recording to the "server" which won't work in this scenario (server needs write access to the Library for TV).  Note that you don't need to restart the HTPC to see changes.  You can just use the MCC command to reload it read-only ("20028,N" where N is the index of the library to reload).

Using Library Server, "Library | Library Sync" should update the client and server.  You should be able to add files from the client by copying files to a network drive and having autoimport pick them up on the server and then do a Library Sync to see them on the client.  I haven't tried this yet but I think it should work (although not very convenient).  I think/hope they are going to improve Library Server where it will be more feasible to use it in this scenario.

It's been long requested, and it finally feels "so close" to reality.  fingers crossed :)

At a minimum, I think one should be able to tag (rate?) files, stop/restart videos across sessions, etc at the client. Some tags should propagate to the server (movie/music rating tags) whereas other tags (last position in av video) should remain on the client and work when the client is restarted.

Changes on the server (new media imported, media tags,...) should be pushed to all clients on an event basis (or cyclically).

In my case, I'm using theater view  with a remote so forcing an update of tags currently requires a restart or library sync. Both solutions require getting out of the couch. Which, kind of, defies the whole concept of using theater view with a remote...
