YouTube in Theater View: Problems from MC14
« on: April 30, 2010, 12:13:30 am »

Still some outstanding usability/performance issues with YouTube in Theater View. They are best summarised in these 2 threads:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=55498.0
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=54104.msg373331#msg373331

Any chance of some improvements in v15 please?

Thanks.

Just tried the youtube player for the first time and it was an experience in frustration.
First - the playback is wrong.  No matter what aspect ratio I chose I am only getting the top 1/2 of the image stretched out to double size high.
Second - the controls are non-intuitive if using a keyboard mouse.  I kept finding myself back at the main youtube menu when I tried to start playback with no direct way to get back to where I was..  When searching you can't just click search, type in the search, and then press enter.
Is there no youtube option for regular (non-theater) view?

When searching you can't just click search, type in the search, and then press enter.

Searching is one of the problems described in the above threads. It's an option on the second roller but navigating the rollers is slow and tedious (only for YouTube). I think Search needs to be available easily and needs to be much more obvious. Search results should also not be cleared each time playback stops.

Again, the key issues (as far as I'm concerned) are described in the threads above.

After testing a QNAP NMP 1000 for my father which did a decent job (not great)
i tried YouTube in MC TheaterView for the first and serious time and i was expecting
something better but it was absolutely the opposite.
At the moment YouTube is nowhere near usable in MC. All is said in the last threads.
Any improvement would be welcome.

Thanks

Ralf,

We are looking into the issues.

On your list, are items 1 and 6 still issues?  With "JRiver URL Reader" filter, how do they look now?

3. If you cancel out of the OSK (ie search dialog) there's no way to bring it back up without exiting and re-entering YouTube. Again, Search needs to be accessible at all times.

You do not need to exit Theater View and then go back, you just need to press left arrow and then right arrow (to re-select "Search").

Most likely your DirectShow filters are messed up.  This thread might help.
If not, email me a log.  I am yaobing at jriver dot com

Yes, I see no change. How do I check though to make sure the "JRiver URL Reader" filter is being used? Is this a directShow filter you are providing?

It is automatically loaded.  Check filter list to confirm.

It may need more work on buffering (it does automatic buffering ahead, but may need to provide some messaging when playback catches up).

Ok it's there in the filter list but again, playback is still choppy. It's not in YouTubeXL.

All the theater view nav and search related issues still apply of course.

PLUS searches still cause a crash.
