Find and delete repeated songs in a library, HOW TO ?
« on: June 20, 2002, 04:45:21 am »

Hi folks,
Does somebody know a way to search an entire collection for songs that appear more than once, and to remove them (based on song name and size or duration, or both, or something similar . Yes I know, if I'm dump, I can just sort my media library with the song name and go thru 10000 songs to remove the ones I do not want... But I don't have a week to spend for that unfortunately.
I know MJ can do a lot of little things with functions hidden in the third sub menu of the fifth special command, but I don't know if there is a way to manage songs this way (would be very useful).
Any idea ?
Or with other software ?

BTW, is it still impossible to use the rename function and to delete the empty folders when moving files ?

Cheers,

Yann L

Sorry, but sorting is your best bet.  Maybe we'll have a better answer in the future...

Thanks Yann.

King (I think) came up with a third party program that can do that. Can't remember the name, and am at the office so I can't access my home Explorer. Worked pretty well, as I recall.

MP3 Spacemaker Pro

http://www.215software.com

It Works Good, It Could Be Better, It Has A Few Bugs (One Being MP3 VBR files Are Displayed as 64kbps)

I do not know of other than MP3 Space Maker who is a VERY PRIMITIVE program

Just be sure to ever never set it to delete mp3 in double.
Just take note, have a look at both [or more]songs, how long they are, check them for quality and after, delete

If you make a seach by bands inside MJ,you will get an easy way to find them

The only problem will be making sure that they are the exact same file and not something like song2.mp3twice once live once not... Mp3 sizes vary by both length and quality... so better quality could easily be mistaken for longer. You search would need to include KBPS and Mins and Song Name.

Artist, Song Name, Song Length would probably provide a pretty thorough match.

With all the matches then shown to the user before being deleted to let him check.

Another option is to use something like CloneSpy.
www.clonespy.com

This is a program for searching for and deleting duplicates of _any_ file type.

-obviously you don't get music specific properties to search by, so only filename can be used to find the files, and size/date/ can be used to select which file.

You may find it useful.
..maybe useless. Next Page

just my $0.02
