FLAC files - Genre?
« on: September 21, 2010, 10:55:32 pm »

I'm streaming to my Pioneer SC-27 Receiver using MC as the DLNA server.  Two minor glitches occur.  On files I have encoded to FLAC using MC, the genre does not show up (I realize this probably has something to do with the Pioneer DLNA).  Also, the album art is slow to load, sometimes not loading at all.  Is there something I could be missing?

Are you streaming flac without conversion (just curious). The Genre is presented to the DLNA renderer regardless of the file type so I'm not sure what's going on there. There are a couple of different ways album art is presented to the renderer. If the DLNAExtra flag is not set it's only presented if the renderer asks for it. If the DLNAExtra flag is set then the album art is also present as a resource. You could try to see if the DLNAExtra flag being on or off affects the behavior. Is this possibly related to the album art size?

Bob, Thanks for replying.

I'm streaming flac without conversion. I think the genre problem is in how the pioneer receiver reads the Vorbis tags as it doesn't occur with mp3 tags, just flac.  It does the same thing with Twonky.  The weird thing is that I can still sort by genre using my new flac files, but it will not display!

As far as the album art, I think you hit the nail on the head with the album art size.  It will not display any album art that is greater than 100kb but will instantly display art that is less than 20kb's in size.  Are that is around 50-70 kb will display incomplete.  I tried setting DLNA Extra, but no difference.  I guess I will have to reduce the size of my art in the files.

I'm having a similar cover art problem with my car mp3 player, it won't play files with large cover art. I'm still trying to find out the exact size since it doesn't seem to be documented anywhere.

Hopefully your receiver will get a firmware update!

Yep....

Not holding out for it though!  I think I'll set up an HTPC with MC on it at my home theatre setup.

Thanks for the latest build with the "present small artwork".  Works like a charm on the Pioneer.  Now if I could only figure out why genre doesn't display....would a wireshark capture provide any helpful info?

Thanks for the feedback on the artwork, good to hear it works for you now!

As far as the Genre on flac files is concerned, the key is to narrow the problem down to a specific field the Pioneer wants but is not getting or as you say, something in the vorbis tags that is lacking.

if you could get the pioneer working with an unconverted MC flac file in another server then a wireshark capture would be useful.
Also, if it worked with MC with a flac file tagged by another program, that could also give a clue.

I think it's more likely that the Pioneer just isn't paying attention to the Genre we send in the ContentDirectory and is reading the tags (improperly).

Thanks Bob,

makes sense.  I'll try tagging with another program and see what that gets me.

Stay tuned...
