MC16, Mastering the handheld
« on: January 08, 2011, 11:06:52 pm »

Mc 16
Build 15 was primarily DNLA and streaming support, the next build I am hoping for is better handheld integration, specifically Android.
The features that I believe would make this program stand out from the competition would be these:

1)   Complete Handheld Sync. What happens now is either you can sync your playlists from your computer to your phone, or sync camera for your pics and videos. What needs to happen is have a total sync where you choose what folders you want synced (To keep those personal things personal). Because phones now are extreme multitaskers, music, video, recording, etc, the current way is not working best. We download music from Amazon, or music junk, whatever, have that folder constantly sync TO the pc when new material is present so we don’t have to hunt and search for our new music. The same with the other chosen pics, downloaded pics, camera pics, and videos are not in the same folder. These folders should be user defined when options for handheld sync is chosen. Ultimately, I would like to connect my phone, hit sync, and have all my new playlists from my computer sync to my phone, and have all my new music, videos, and pics that are on my phone sync TO my computer with one click.
So-

Options for syncing handheld:
Handheld Folder sync TO computer                  File type                 Destination folder
E:/DCIM                                   jpg, 3gp         C:/Cell Phone/Camera
E:/AMAZON                                                        MP3          C:/Music
E:/DOWNLOADS                                 ALL               C:/Cell Phone/Texts
E:/whatever other folders

Same set up as regular though with rules, for music have artist/album organization, dates for pictures and videos, do not sync files that were deleted, do not sync if file has synced before, etc

2)   Have the RATINGS move over to and from my phone. This is simple, other programs do this, MC16 should also.
3)   Better video conversions. My MyTouch 4g is 400x800, yet there is no option for this under conversion. I would like to have vastly more options for video conversion. Again, this other program does this.
4)   Wi-Fi sync. Since docks are the craze right now, and almost every smart phone has Wi-Fi, I would like to be able to connect my phone to the dock at night and while it connects to my LAN, have the ability for my playlists and phone data to sync and convert while I am sleeping and my phone is charging. This can be as easy as creating an app that says nothing more than “Sync” or under options “Always sync when in LAN”. Waking up and converting movies and shows takes a while, I would like to do that while I’m asleep. Again, this other program does this.

5)   Recorded TV conversion. With the TV tuner card and the ability to record TV, I would like to be able to actually watch those recordings while I am away from the computer.

6)   Google Earth Geotaging for pics – Our phones now have Geotagging abilities. The ability to save these under MC16 and have them open in Google Earth is another feature lacking that other programs provide.

Almost all of these options are done under another specific program, but I do not like the layout and its lack of options. So I would like to see this in the new MC16, if so, I would gladly pay for an upgrade but presently, there is nothing that is pushing me to upgrade from 15, and I am second guessing my upgrade to 15.

While I believe that the handheld features do need some work, I don't think that should be the primary feature of MC16. The HTPC/Theater View still needs some major vamping to catch up with WMC and hardware players. Specifically, online content integration, browsing features, "apps" (like weather, news, etc.), media organization, automation, etc. JRiver is currently behind the pack in a few specific areas that it could easily fix and become THE home theater program of choice.

All of the handheld features depend on hardware evolution. HTPC integration is solely dependent on the direction that MC wants to go.

I'll second Bryanhoop's thoughts.  HTPC-wise, MC has a lot of catching up to do with the likes of XBMC.  The newest builds just beat the hell out of MC with the big screen interface in mind.

That said, I've been a loyal MC customer for nine years and don't plan to drop my license anytime soon.  The library management of *every* other media software out there pales in comparison to MC.  Throw a couple hundred thousand tracks at the competition's offerings, and they die a slow and ugly death.  iTunes is perhaps the worst of them all when it comes to managing large collections.  MC handles the same load with aplomb.
