Copying Playlists from One Playlist Group to Another
« on: June 11, 2002, 04:08:33 pm »

In MJ 8.0.293, is there a way to copy playlists from one playlist group to another playlist group without having to retype the name of the playlist?

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm really digging 8.0.

You can drag-n-drop to move playlists around.  To make a copy of a playlist, you'll have to make a new playlist and then drag the same files into it...

Thanks Tuber,

Thanks, Matt. Because I have tons of playlists that I would like to place in multiple playlist groups, it would be truly fantastic if I didn't have to retype the playlist name when I made copies of the playlists from one group to another.

Right now, MJ seems very close to being able to do this. If you right click on a playlist, click on "Send To", select "Playlist", then select "Create/Select Playlist...", a dialogue box comes up with a blank "Name" field for the as-yet-to-be copied playlist. Making an exact copy of the playlist in another playlist group is easy enough by selecting the destination playlist group path from the "Path" drop down box, then typing the original name of the playlist in the "Name" box. However, were this name field to be filled in by default with the name of the playlist being copied (and selected to make it easy to type in a different name), then playlists could be copied from one playlist group to another without having to retype the name of the playlist (and without significantly disturbing the functionality and operation of the current scheme).

I'm sure I haven't considered the downsides and difficulty of making this change, but it sure would be a tremendous help to me in organizing and displaying my collection. I'd be glad to copy this over to a wish-list.

Thanks for the help and consideration.

Hey Tuber, I don't know why you would want to have the same list in multiple groups, but since you do, consider this.

Say you copy a list of files into new playlists within say, 5 different groups, (BTW I don't know how else you can do it).  What do you then do if you want to modify that list (and all its copies)?  You would have to go into the particular list in each of the 5 groups and make the modifications 5 times.  Humbug!

You'd certainly be better off to make a "master" list somewhere, and then, in each group, make a smarlist which included only the files from that "master".
At least that way you could update every "instance" of the list in the various groups,  by updating only the master.

Not sure if you have come across the difference between copying and instancing before, but instancing is always gonna be a way smarter option.  Let the machine do the work!

Thanks, Callithumpian. That's a handy suggestion.

For my current purposes though, it happens that the playlists I need copies of will be static, and that the smartlist "mirrors" you suggest are kinda problematic (because of the way they are processed in media view).

I'm working on what's proving to be a difficult organization project (because of an unwieldy collection and an a-retentive collection owner Next Page), so your suggestion may very well be useful down the line. Thanks for your help.
