Problem organising music
« on: February 27, 2011, 02:05:56 pm »

Hi sorry if this problem has been mentioned and fixed elsewhere but i couldn't find it if it has.

I've just imported a folder of music by an artist but when I go to artist view it has separated some of the tracks into a separate artist category, in this case Too Short and Too $hort. when this has happened before I've just dragged and dropped the tracks into the correct place and all is good but for some reason this doesn't work on this occasion. I've tried changing the name in the tag but that doesn't work either. How can i get the two to merge? any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance  :)

When you change the tag did you change both the Artist and Album Artist tags?  Sometimes that helps

Cheers for the suggestions but done all that. I've even taken the albums out of the library and moved the folders and changed the meta data, but it still does the same. it wouldn't be a problem if it was the whole album but its only the odd track.

Highlight all instances of the tracks from the same album and go to the tags. Then select each of the common aspects in turn and change them as one - artist, album, album artist, genre, date and so on. That way, all possible spelling differences, erroneous spaces and so on, will be removed and it all should merge

Ok done that now but still won't merge. might retry ripping the discs and if that doesn't work just not bother putting them in the library as when it comes to stuff being where they should be it's gotta be right lol Thanks for the help so far  :)

Weird! I'd do what you said - delete them and re-rip and see what happens

Well re ripped and the albums but still doing the same excpet now it's split the 3 tracks under the Too $hort tag into a third one called Lbum Rtists. so just gonna remove it and call it a day with those particular albums

Is that the only album that's is displaying those symptoms? If so, try ripping via something else like WMP and then importing into JR.

it's two albums and they were originally ripped using WMP. Its only on JR that this problem seems to arise all other players i've used put them in the right place.

MC organizes files according to information in it's database. Attempting to resolve the issue by re-ripping is pointless. You must have missed something in following the advice given first. If the information about the files is recorded properly, then they will be displayed properly—grouped as complete albums.

Use a Panes or File List view and display all the relevant fields—Artist, Album, Album Artist, Album Artist (auto)—so you can see what's happening. If [Artist] and [Album] are the same and the files are in the same folder, then [Album Artist (auto)] will be [Artist] unless overridden by [Album Artist]. The most common cause of this situation is there are inconsistent values in [Album Artist] (probably written to the file tag from an online source and imported by MC). If this is the case, the solution is simply to delete such values. Alternatively, you can record a common value to [Album Artist] to override inconsistencies in [Artist].
