Syncing Two PC's........
« on: June 05, 2002, 11:02:38 am »

I have two PC's that I use for music, one is a fast P4 that I prefer to use to rip, download and maintain files on; The second is an average speed laptop that I like to use for playback. My question is this: How can I syncronize the work I've done on the P4 (i.e. Tagging, Cover Art etc.) with the laptop (They are connected together via a home network)?
Additionaly is there another way to sync the actual data files other than deleting all of the files on the laptop then replacing them with latest crop of files from the PC?

Thanks for your help!!

Someone said they were using a program called Comparator for that.  Don't know anything about it, but I think the thread was on "firewire and usb 2, and should be in the last week.

I use synchromagic (try http://www.tucows.com). It's a file system or folder or file syncrhonizer. Pretty straightforward - fully schedulable etc. Just share the interesting directory on one machine to the other (doesn't matter which direction) then create a synch task that synchs them.

I suggest you create a few play directories on each machine once you've shared a folder or disk, and then play with making tasks that sync the two DISPOSABLE directories full of DISPOSABLE files. This will help ensure you have a good feel for what it'll do and never lose files by accident.

Thanks for the suggestions! That should work for the data/mp3 files. What file/files do I need to sync within MJ to make sure all my tagging and cover-art files are the same on both machines ( I have only been doing editing [tons of it!] on the PC)?

BTW......Did you edit my MM comment??

Although if you see my posts recently I am hardly the one giving advice but...

Have you looked at maintaining one database of your files and using Media Server to pipe them over to the laptop ??

This way you only have one database and you cant update it from the laptop but you can have a current accurate database...

The more you play the more your realise you are ill equiped for all this... I am constantly being frustrated by my missunderstandings and ill advised plans...

Being on AVS for hours a day for 2 years has not helped me work this addiction out yet...

I think by default the data will be stored as a subdirectory in the MJ install directory - including cover art. You can have the cover art (and much, though probably not all of the meta data) stored in the audio files themselves; I haven't played with this much - it should work ok at lesat. You may want to have MJ treat your laptop as a personal audio player and then sync down what you like onto your laptop. That's probably the route I'd take - no idea how to do it though.

Great Question.  I have the exact setup you have.  I wanted two files of my MP3 for backup, etc.

Here is what I do weekly or more depending on the amount of changes that have been make to my "production database".  I  make all changes to one database then sync to the other.

I have moved my pointer databases from the jriver directory to my music directory.

First copy your database from the production machine to the backup machine (make sure both are in sync) Now copy your pointer files over as well.  Remember the pointers will not show in the same drive letter (or maybe it will) Mine is production drive "D:\Music" with sub directories for videos, etc and my backup is "F:\music" Identical except for the drive letter.

Now that everything is copied over simply go to mediajukebox and
go to Edit, Properties, Tools, find & replace, "check" location box, enter in find-what "D:" (for production system) and enter into replace "F:" (for backup database location.  Assuming your subdirectories are the same this will change your backup pointer to the correct area.  All of your playlists, etc function correctly.

Now, go to http://softbytelabs.com/Frames.html and download Comparator .  This will allow you to sync from production to backup only the items that are new or have changed.  The backup side that has new or changed should be deleted.  If you have your pointer database in the tree structure it will automatically be synced also.

I use comparator weekly to sync my production to backup and then do the find and replace and all is well.....

This is great stuff.
