wasapi and other media players
« on: April 13, 2011, 03:08:58 pm »

Hi I have the latest beta version of media player 16.
I am using wasapi output and connected to my receiver through s/pdif for best quality bit perfect sound.
Preferences are to use media player for sound and WMP classic ht for movies
Using windows 7

I have set up media server to start with windows so I can use gizmo and my android phone to play and control music around the house.
Everything works great, the only inconvenience is that by having this set up if I want to use WMP or any other program to play music or movies I need to close media server first or else other programs won't play sound since wasapi took over. Is there a way around this? Or else I have to shut down the server all the time I want to play movie or music using another program and think about re-starting it after.
Didn't mind closing media player when using something else but rather not close and open the server so it can be accesed easily.
Web sounds coming from ex. Youtube or mp3 through browser play fine.
Windows system sounds play fine

TIA

Does your receiver have multiple digital inputs and can it switch between those digital inputs?

If it does, one potential solution would be to put two sound cards in the computer.  One sound card will be set as the default audio device and will be what WMP Classic, Flash, and other apps will use.  One sound card will be set as a secondary audio device and will be what MC16 will use.  Then use your receiver to switch between the two digital inputs.  MC16 will get exclusive use of one sound card.  Everything else will share the other sound card.

The additional sound card doesn't need to be anything fancy.  Just something that can output digital (optical or coax, whatever your receiver supports).  You can run two or more sound cards at once.  They'll be independent of each other.

Thanks for the reply, but switching to wasapi-event style fixed the problem.
