HDMI Video\Audio Transmission
« on: March 04, 2011, 09:56:08 pm »

Is There A Device That You Can Connect To Your Roku Device On The HDMI and transmit that data to other TVs wireless?

I was also thinking about getting a HDMI video card, and using that for one source, so i can then push that data directly to my TV, or to a HDMI transmitter.

Unfortunately, the ones that work are still quite expensive (the last I looked extensively, which was back in November before the holidays).  There are basically two good ones that I know about.  The Geffen one, and the RocketFish one from Best Buy.  There's a Phillips one too, but it is like $1000.

If you can physically run the cabling, you'd probably be better off running the wire.  Probably the best way to pull long runs of digital video cable through the wall would be using RapidRun AV cabling.  RapidRun cables are a modular cable design from CablesToGo that are really quite nice.  You buy the base cable (one of three different types - digital, multimedia, or "PC" for VGA type signals), and then "ends" (wall plates or cable leads) that attach to these universal cables.  There is a color coding system for the ends and some of them can work on multiple types of base cables.  They have passive runs of digital cable that work up to 35', and active runs (where one end has a powered active adapter) that can go 100'.  You can choose HDMI and DVI leads for the digital cables.  I've used them extensively at work and they're great.

If you buy them, find the part numbers you need on CablesToGo.com but don't buy them there.  If you search for the part numbers on Amazon, you can find the cables and leads for about 1/2 the cost for the exact same thing.  For example, here's a 50' Digital Runner cable on Amazon.

HDMI video cards work great though.  I'm particularly pleased with my AMD Radeon 6000 series card's HDMI capabilities (it can do full audio bitsteaming and the whole bit).  If you don't need to deal with quality audio at all because you don't have an HDMI-capable receiver, then you could go with a cheaper one (assuming you're not doing gaming).

The Problem I See Is The Range, Also Stated Line Of Sight

The Geffen one: Up to a 30 foot line-of-sight distance (less if going through a wall to an adjacent room)
The RocketFish one: capable of streaming media a maximum of 33 feet inside a single room—their signals can’t penetrate walls.

How Do People Move Video From Room To Room Wireless Effectively?

The RapidRun AV cabling Seems Rather Expensive

I Am Thinking The Only Way To Do This Is To Connect All Your HDMI Devices To A Switch Box, Then Output Local Video Directly To The TV HDMI Connection, Then Also Take A HDMI Out From The Switch Box And Convert HDMI To RF, Then Send It Over RG/6 Cable.

I Currently Have 3 HDMI Devices Connected To My Family Room\Computer Room TV.

1. Tivo
2. Roku
3. Sony 400 DVD Jukebox

The Tivo Is Also Connected From The RCA Out Ports To A RF Converter, This Is Then Connected\Wired To 3 TVs Using RG/6 Cable

1. Main Bathroom
2. Master Bathroom
3. Master Bedroom

Any Other Ideas?

The problem is one of bandwidth.

HDMI 1.4 can carry a maximum data rate of approximately 10.2 Gbps, including overhead.
Your CAT5 ethernet cable is only designed to carry a theoretical maximum of 1 Gbps.  CAT6 can be used to carry 10 Gbps, but only when using very expensive switches and it is much more length limited then.

Wireless is even more difficult to manage.  You could certainly pull it off, but doing so using the spectrum allocated for unlicensed use in the US would be very difficult.

You could also conceivably convert the HDMI to HD-SDI and transmit it around the house using cheap coaxial cable, but this wouldn't be cheap in the end either because the converters are expensive.  You'd need something like this at the source end (to convert from HDMI to HD-SDI) and then something like this at the receiver end (to convert back to HDMI).

I Forgot To Tell You Two Of The TV's Are Not HD Yet.

I Bought Some Things From Amazon Today, Including A New Video Card To See If I Can Get Something Working A Bit Better Than What I Have.

I Will Let You Know How It Works out.

Phase One

I Got My Video Board Today, It Has A HDMI Connection On It, So The Picture Is Better Than Using A VGA Splitter.

Today I Got The HDMI Converter (HDMI To Component), Then It Goes Into A Component To RF Box

I Hooked It Up To My HDMI Switch And I Can Now Send Tivo, Roku, My Computer, And MY CD Jukebox To RG/6 Cable So I Can Watch The Same Show on All TVs In My House.

Maybe One Day When I Upgrade Them All To HD, I May Run HDMI Cables Thru The House.

You might be better off to distribute video on your LAN or WAN using ordinary TCP/IP, then convert to HDMI with a box next to each TV.  DLNA is one way to do that.

(I don't think I've typed "TCP/IP" in a few years.)

I think you meant WLAN, not WAN.  Streaming video over the Internet (Wide Area Network) is certainly possible, but that's not really what King was looking for.

I see... So you want to get the HDMI output from the HDMI switch to the Master Bedroom HDTV, but have the rest of it stay essentially the same.  The problem is that the Master bedroom is far away and inconvenient to directly wire.

Component will be much easier to run over longer distances with cheaper cabling.  Is the HDMI->Component converter you have HD?  Assuming it is (and that the RF converter downscales it), a good plan would be to run component out of that box to the bedroom.  If not, look for a converter that goes from HDMI to component that handles HD (and maybe a three way HDMI splitter if needed).

I'd again recommend the RapidRun if you want to go through conduit.  If not, or if you don't have the budget, cheaper (but well shielded) stuff from MonoPrice will probably work.  BlueJeansCable also makes very nice stuff certified for long runs.

Another option would be to go the SDI route (you can probably get one that does HDMI passthrough so you wouldn't need to replace the splitter in that case.  SDI uses cheap 75ohm RG6 cable and regular BNC connectors, so it is cheap as it gets pretty cheap and works well for long cable runs.  That's why they use it in studios.  The "endpoint" converters are expensive, but it depends what you get into with cable costs and whatnot if it is worth it overall.

I am going to leave it as is for now.

But The Converter Is HDMI In And Analog Video Out To A Analog RF Converter.

So The Video Going Into The Master Bedroom HD TV Is Really An Analog Signal.

It Still Looks Good However.

I May Get A 3 Way Powered Amplified HDMI Splitter At Some Point, And Try To Run HDMI To The Master Bedroom TV, First On The Floor, Then Under The House. It May Run 50 Feet, Not Sure If I Would Need A Booster, If So I Would Need To Run Electric Under The House In That Location. And Put A Booster 50% Thru The Cable (As I Have Read) I Have Also Read And I Think It Was BlueJeans They Make A Self Powered HDMI Cable With A Built In Booster HDMI Cable.

I Think  That Way May Be The Easiest And Cheapest To Make A Modification To This Setup.

To Tell You The Truth I Am Tired Of Crawling Under The House (And I Used To Do This For A Living Up Till November)

I've seen those before.  I've never used them.  If you do it, let me know how it works out.  I'm always curious about how to handle long digital cable runs.

Analog component should be no worse quality at 1080p (AT ALL) just because it is component.  The main problem is that it can't carry multichannel surround without a whole bunch of cables.  For video and regular stereo audio, it is very good for long runs.

And, sometimes TVs do a worse job processing the Analog inputs.  Though about just as often they do a terrible job with the digital ones, so...  ?  ::)

I Made A Modification Today

I Took Out The 4 Way RF Splitter In Inserted A 4 Way Amplified Splitter

Channel Master Model 3414 "Video Amplifier Mini Digital"

This Gives A 8db Gain On All 4 Of The Cables Running To The Other Rooms, And Clears Up The Interference I Could See On The Screens.
