About the deinterlacing feature.

Bottom-line:
1. You need the Deinterlace.ax Active-X control and register it using regsvr32.exe (E.g.: regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Deinterlace\Deinterlace.ax").
It's not part of the MediaJukebox distribution (yet? current version: 8.0.289).
2. The standard (built-in Two-Frame) deinterlace type works best (for me and I guess for most people out there).
3. You may want to try the plug-ins from DScaler (available for download at http://www.dscaler.com/downloads.htm ) if you want better deinterlacing for moving texts.
4. The deinterlace Active-X control may become available as a separate package until the next build; my guess is that it will be included in the next update (am I correct?).

Subject: Deinterlacing TV in MediaJukebox

Hi,

I wish to use a deinterlacer for my TV tuner card in Media Jukebox.
I've read your description at

http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/interact/NeoBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=inter&Post=10528&BoardIdle=7&SortingBy=0&BoardOrder=Descend&Page=0&UserSession=

After that I've downloaded the latest version of DScaler (version 3.1.0
at http://www.dscaler.com/downloads.htm ) but I feel it doesn't include an
installer. Unzipping the file and starting the dscaler.exe program,
directly runs it: no install...

Media Jukebox still doesn't find the deinterlace filter.

What should I do?

Greetings,

Erik

Hello Erik,

Dscaler that you downloaded is the main program of DScaler. No installation
is needed for that. You just unzip the files into a folder and execute the
executable.

For using Deinterlace in Media Jukebox, you do not need the DScaler main
program. You need the Deinterlace filter for DirectShow. The filter is also
available from DScaler site. However I do not know whether they have a build
for download that includes the latest fixes. I am therefore sending you the
file that I built from their source code. This version works with Media
Jukebox.

To use it, just unzip it into a folder and register the ActiveX control
Deinterlace.ax.

Additionally, if you want to use the Plug-ins for deinterlace, you can
find files with names like DI_XXXX.DLL from the DScaler folder (the one you
downloaded from DScaler site) and copy them into the folder where
Deinterlace.ax is. This way you can also use the plug-ins, in addition to
the built-in algorithms. Some plug-ins would cause crashes. You have to
experiment with them.

The deinterlace filter is under a LGPL license. Please read Copying.txt
for details.

Thanx for your help!

I'll share my findings with you.
I looked mostly at text on the tv screen to determine whether or not it
was clear to read.
Without deinterlacing still text are clear to read, but moving text (such
as CNN (and in the Netherlands RTL 5) regularly displays) is nearly
impossible to read. It's like reading two lines of text displayed on top of
eachother.
With deinterlacing enabled I've come to the conclusion that the Two-Frame
deinterlace type show best results.
Also I find that in general the DScaler plug-in performs slightly better
than the built-in routine with the same name, when it comes to moving texts.
However, the DScaler plug-in for Two-Frame deinterlacing makes text that
stands still a little blurry, while the built-in Two-Frame routine keeps is
clear to read.

So my choice is definitely the built in Two-Frame deinterlace type.
It simply performs well all-round.

Maybe it's an idea to ship the deinterlace.ax with the MediaJukebox
distribution (or is that not possible due to the GNU LIBRARY GENERAL
PUBLIC LICENSE)?

Greetings,

Erik

Erik, Thanks for sharing your findings.

We have not decided how to distribute the deinterlaced filter yet. Making it
part of MJ download is a possibility.

Erik Jan,
Thanks for the details. Would you post this to Interact or may I? Better if you can do it.

Yaobing or Nikolay,
Maybe we could make an MJ package out of this until the next build.
