A good time of year
« on: June 30, 2011, 05:47:29 pm »

This is one of my favorite times of year.

Why, you ask?

Besides the great weather, the fruit on our Santa Rosa plum tree, one of my favorite fruits, is ripe and wonderfully sweet.  The plums can be picked while still red on the outside for a tarter fruit, and as they turn purple, become sweeter and sweeter.

I just went out and picked five; ate three, and will have two later.  Some days, while working in the yard, I might have ten.  Yum.

The tree has produced over 800 plums one year.

Here you go.  It is a little too sunny outside to get better shots of the tree.

The new 10' orchard ladder w/telescoping leg is super handy.

I Love Food (One Of My Many Problems)

They Look Real Nice...

I Have A Few Fruit Trees, Pear Apple, Peach, Plum

I picked The Perfect Granny Smith Apple The Other Day When I Was Mowing The Lawn.

I Am Not Into Sweets Too Much But This Apple Kept Calling My Name...

I Took It Sliced Thin And Cooked it With Some Caramel (Sugar In A Fry Pan, When Browned, Add A Bit Of Butter)

You Can Also Add A Dash Of Heavy Cream If You Like

It Was Yummy...

Thanks King.  Fruit trees are a kick.

Last week...

We picked the last of the first crop of Meyer Lemons, about 200 of them.  We did some heavy pruning, so it only produced about 500 this year.  It's gearing up for the next crop.

The grapefruit tree is in production, with large, heavy fruit.  Picked about 1/2 dozen last weekend.  I'm not certain of the variety; it gets pinkish on top, but not quite a Ruby I think.  I'll post photos of the fruit if anyone can help identify.

We also emptied one orange tree, picking the last of the perhaps 150 oranges.  The other orange tree (a naval, which ripens later) is continuing its streak of increased annual production.

We had a couple of smallish peach trees, but they had a leaf curl problem, were too shaded, and were useless, in my opinion (fruit wasn't spectacular, so why waste the real estate on poor performers!).  I took them out this year.  Likewise the apricot.  Last year, I took out an excellent producing pear tree, because it was just too crowded.   So I'm working on an additional area to plant new peach, apricot, and nectarine trees.

Hopefully we'll get some good pomegranates (they're flowering now).  We have way too many key limes.  Fuji apples are getting big now too.

I'll go eat another plum now...
