Libraries
« on: May 27, 2002, 10:59:35 am »

I am running 8.0284 (just brought it down).

I like to keep my libraries on a seperate machine on my network.  This way the whole family has the same library.  I am currently finding it impossible to set my new library as the default library OR to delete the default library.  Any help possible will be appreciated.

Thanks
Liz

You can set up a new library, then select it.  MJ will use it after that.

Also, you might take a look at Media Server.

Help in MJ may be useful.

I reported a network library bug in MJ8 months ago. I think this is the same thing your talking about. I haven't checked to see if it was ever fixed or not.

I won't be able to check anything until atleast Tuesday when I am able to purchase MJ8 again.

I'm also having this problem.  When I add a library with cloned information from the original I end up with both libraries with a check mark when I access File/Library from the main menu.  If I go into the library manager and try to delete either one I get the message "Cannot delete current library".  If I keep cloning/adding libraries the all show up as checked and none can be deleted.  I'm currently using 8.0.257 while waiting for the logistics of the new licensing routine to settle down.

I'm bumping this because it seems at least several people are having this problem.  When I use the library manager to add a new library, it and all the old libraries are checked.

If you're using a UNC path name, then it's the same "bug" as I reported a few months ago. They most likely missed that one.

Yes, it works for me now in 8.0.286
At first I thought it wasn't fixed: all libraries were still checked and I couldn't uncheck them. But, after creating another new one in a different folder and making it the current library, I could  then delete the others and everything seems normal.
Why do the library files need to be in different folders? I had not understood that before.

The database is just a few files, with specific names, in a folder -- and you can't have two files with the same name and folder in Windows.

Hi Matt:

Thanks for the info that libraries have to be in separate directory folders.  I don't think that's in the docs anywhere.  How about adding it?

Regards,

MJ now prevents attempts to create a new library in the same folder as the default library: you are forced to choose or create a new location. This did not happen before.
That's OK but would it not be simpler if you could create a new library, with a different name, in the same folder?
(I also think the default file naming of library backup files might be more helpful if it incorporated the chosen library name rather than the one default name for all)

....have been trying it out a bit more:
Something else I had not understood from the help docs:
There is a prompt to ask which library you want to backup (and I assumed that information  was saved)
BUT when you do a restore it overwrites whatever is selected as the current library.
So you need to be careful that all libraries are separately backed up.

I just downloaded the released version 8 (8.0.293) and it let be create a new library in the same folder without error or warnings. I this is fixed by preventing two in same folder, the fix didn't make it to my download.

It shouldn't.  Do a Help -> About and make sure it says 8.0.293 in the title bar.  And try again just to make sure.  If it still lets you, let us know and we'll fix it.

And m nmn, about the backups, they're generic (not tied to a certain database), so yes, you need to keep track of what library you're backing up and restoring.

Take care.
