Sound skips when playing videos with wasapi exclusive
« on: September 05, 2011, 06:32:28 pm »

The audio works perfectly for videos when wasapi is not set to exclusive, although as soon as I set wasapi to 'open device for exclusive access' I get sporadic jittering clicking and stuttering. I don't have any problems with audio files but when I try playing video I just can't seem to figure out what's going on.
I've tried forcing different sample rate, bit depth and output channel settings under both jriver's output format dsp and the soundcard's control panel, which didnt make any difference. Also tried increasing the audio buffer past the lowest setting of 5ms which just makes the problem worse.

If anyone has any further ideas it would be much appreciated about now because to my ears it's worth figuring out the problem to have exclusive mode running properly; I'm sure I'm not refering to some silly placebo effect here either.

Cpu: Amd phenom II 550be @ 3.6 (dualcore)
Ram: 4GB dualchannel ddr2 800mhz
Gpu: Amd 6850 1gb
soundcard: asus xonar dx

Also it doesn't change the problem wither I run ROHQ or RO standard.

Exclusive mode just means that one program can have the output interface alone, and it should mean that no other program could cause you problems, but apparently something else is.  You could check the Windows sound settings in Control Panel.

I might just turn exclusive off (since it works) and enjoy the movie.

Here's a note from the wiki regarding the Asus Xonar:
Quote
The only way to prevent a Creative Labs X-Fi based card or Asus Xonar card from resampling all incoming audio is to use ASIO and the driver that came with the card. With these cards, WASAPI exclusive will not change the master clock of the card.
So make sure you have the Asus ASIO drivers installed and try ASIO mode instead of WASAPI.
