Girder + USB-UIRT problems with Windows 7
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:32:05 am »

Hello,
Maybe someone with a similar setup can help me out...
I have been using Girder + USB-UIRT on an XP-based system to control my MC/HTPC for years without any big issues.
Recently, I had to upgrade Windows 7.
With W7, Girder now GPFs coming out of Standby. Always.
It either USB-UIRT driver or USB-UIRT Girder plugin or both. That's how it is. I have the latest vesions of both and I doubt there will be any updates.

Does anyone know a workaround?

I thought I found one but couldn't implement it.

I found that if I close Girder, put the computer to sleep, wake it up and restart Girder, then all works fine.

So I thought if I run a script which closes Girder before the puter goes to sleep and another script to start Girder on wake up, this would fix the problem.

There are tool for doing so (Girder itself, Windows 7 Suspend/Resume Control). This worked in XP - XP would wait until that stuff close and than go to sleep. However W7 goes to sleep almost instantly- nothing gets closed.

Any workaround here?

Thanks!

I have girder5 & USBUIRT running fine on Win7 and can go in and out of standby.

I seem to remember having to update something, but it was a while back so will have to try to remember what it was.

What version of Girder are you running?

I'm using the USBUIRT driver USBUIRT_Win7_Vista_v20601.zip, is that the one you're using? If not PM me your email and I'll send it to you.

it's G4.
Actually, it's not girder's fault. I tried EventGhost instead of Girder and it BSODed too.
So, it's the uirt driver. anything which uses it bsod's on wakeup...
And I am starting to suspect that it has to do with my system being AMD-based.
I'll check tonite.

And it's Girder 5?

FWIW:  I had crashing and performance problems with Girder 4 (under Win7 64bit) that were largely solved by upgrading to Girder 5.  I kicked myself for waiting so long to upgrade in the end.

I do get occasional crashes of the USBUIRT driver here (no bluescreens, it just stops working until I reboot), and they generally seem to happen while the HTPC is sleeping.... But it is pretty rare (no more than once a month or so), and hasn't been a big bother.

I'm on driver: 2.4.16.0 (2/17/2009).

Never bothered even checking for a new version, though I am on an Intel machine.

I fixed it.
AMD was not the problem (some people reported amd's usbfilter.sys causing problems).

I reinstalled W7 this time being more careful with drivers and such.

2 thing might'd been causing the problem.
1. USB-UIRT was plugged into USB3 port (shouldn't be a problem though, but who knows. Worked in XP).
2. This must be it: I used an old version of MST tool (pre-Vista) to enable usb-uirt wake-up and I think it messed up the sleep/hibernation things in W7 - hybrid sleep and hibernation disappeared from standby options.

Now all works.

Just FYI. To my surprize USB-UIRT now reports different codes from the same remote. I had to relearn everything including the wake-up code (which is hardcoded into prom).

Now downloading/installing W7 updates - hope it won't break anything... : )

Thanks!

Glad to hear you sorted it out.

Mine didn't generate new remote codes under Win7, but I guess that's a small price to pay V's your previous issues

Sorted this out too..
I ran the lrnhelper utility to check the wake-up codes in usb-uirt and this lrnhelper reverted the option "generate uirtx-compatible codes" back to default, i.e. disabled. Went back and re-enabled. Now old codes are back.
:)
Sorry for being a bit OOT here but promixis/usb-uirt forums are pretty much dead...

I've noticed that too... There used to be an active community over at Promixis, but it just about died there, it seems.  I wonder what happened?

I still love the product.

they jacked up prices and slowed down development...

Have you checked EventGhost out? Looks like it's a good Girder alternative and it's more actively developed.. and free. I might switch someday.
