Cleanup Tool
« on: October 17, 2011, 10:49:05 pm »

I had a catastrophic crash on my server a few weeks back, but luckily had most of my media backed up. As I am copying back to my server I am seeing hundreds of folders containing nothing but media center generated xml files. This might have happened when using the Rename & Move tool to organize my files  at some point in the beta process before that tool knew to move the xml files with the media.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm not alone in this, and I must have hundreds of empty folders too. Anybody know of a good tool that can scan for empty folders and delete them? How would you go about deleting all the detached xml files?

One idea I have is to do a library backup. Turn off auto import. Then delete all the xml files in my whole Video share. Then in MC, do a Update tags from Library. Anybody see any potential pitfalls in this?

I could suggest several excellent file utilities but I think you can do it with MC.

Navigate to the root of the empty folders in Drives and Devices, turn on Show File in Subfolders, select the subset of XML orphans and delete (with remove from disk option). MC will delete the empty folders in the process.

Your idea might work. I don't use sidecar files so I am not sure.
