Recommended lossless format to rip audio
« on: December 26, 2011, 11:35:56 pm »

Right now pretty much my whole music library is in lossless WMA format. It works. I'm wondering if it makes sense for me to rip in a different lossless format to reduce the amount of transcoding that happens when I play music to different devices. Currently I play music to MC clients and to Squeezebox devices. I'm betting that in both cases, the server has to transcode the file into some other format.

Can I pick a format that is lossless but eliminates the need for transcoding in at least one of my scenarios? Is it smart for me to want to do this or should I just stick with WMA?

Thanks.

You can stream FLAC directly to SBs - no transcoding.  The SB itself is coded to natively handle FLAC.

FLAC decodes efficiently; it is encoding that requires more work.
