PC Mains Interference
« on: December 31, 2011, 05:04:45 am »

I have configured my PC to play MC17 through either USB 2.0 into DACMagic Plus using the Cambridge drivers, or by WASAPI Event through the optical toslink. The inherent SQ is better using the USB mode, however, when the USB cable is connected between the PC and te DAC, and the PC PSU is connected, there is an audible mains ripple that makes it unusable. Removing the power cable from the PC and the noise vanishes. Using the optical connection, although there is some noise present when the PSU is connected, it is muhc much quieter, and does not interfere with the music.

What can I do to eliminate the noise when using USB mode? I am unsing the cheapo USB cable that came with the DAC, but I suspect a change of cable isn't the route cause fix....

Try running it through a powered hub.  Put nothing else on the hub.

The simple answer is read the user manual. there is a ground/lift switch on the rear panel next to the USB port. Now the interference is very low, and the same on both optical and USB connections.
