DSD playback re-buffering
« on: November 06, 2011, 01:13:07 am »

Hi,
I have problems playing dff files in MC16 and MC17. It plays for a few seconds and then starts to re-buffer. This happens all the time. I was thinking this is a CPU power issue but in foobar2000 it play dff files without a hickup.

Any ideas?

Thanks

What sample rate are you playing the files at?

You might try picking a lower sample rate in DSP Studio > Output Format.

I am playing at 96K. I have also tried lower sample rates but see the same behaviour. The strange thing is that in foobar2000 there is no problem at all.

What happens if you use WASAPI - Event Style with 250ms or 500ms of buffering?

Thanks.

I had the same problems (I have an old PC) and I fixed it setting DSP Studio > Output Format > Greater than 192,000 > 88,200 Hz instead of 96,000 Hz.

Resampling DSD to 88,200 Hz requires less CPU so maybe this can be useful for you.

I have seen this in the last few builds of JRiver (maybe the last month or so). The only way to cure this seems to be to kick up prebuffering to 20 secs. It doesnt seem to matter if memory play is selected or not. Otherwise the buffer empties and refills in a cicrcular loop interupting playback and is quite unusable. The downside is that there is an initial lag in kicking of an album although track to track changes are fine once underway. This is playing DSD Data. PCM seems fine.

I am having the exact same issue.  Even when it buffers 20 seconds worth, it stutters on playback within those 20 secs.

You might try this build:

It improves DSD performance.

Resampling such high sample rates is still CPU intensive, so you may still need a fast computer for that part.
