Better Cover Art Easier?
« on: February 20, 2012, 11:39:29 am »

As I have posted several times, I am not really satisfied how I can get cover art inside MC from the internet and/or maintain the current cover art.

Mostly when I let MC automatically download covers I'm getting wrong ones or bad ones (too small). Then I switch to Album Art Downloader and get the covers from there, where I mostly find larger ones and the right ones.

I have configured MC to have Album Art Downloader in "sent to". Then Album Art Downloader opens and I copy the cover from there to insert it with "Cover Art --> paste from clipboard. This works, but is somewhat slow if you do it for 20 or 100 covers.

Question:
- Is there a keyboard shortcut to execute the two commands?

This would help speeding things up.

Suggestion

- Could JRiver somehow include the intelligence of Album Art Downloader and then for the user with on click pick the best choice cover image and add it to the requested files

Also for cover art maintenance it would be great to be able to identify small covers easily. I have used the plug in script to add image width and height into the library. This helps, but again is a lot of work and proofed to be unstable. I had a lot of crashes with MC 17 when the plug in was enabled.

Request
- Could your programmers include something like the plug in does with less pain for the user?

Thanks for helping to get better covers.

What do other users do that care about good covers?

Doesn't Cover Art->"Get From Internet" have the same functionality as Album Art Downloader?

No, it doesn't. (At least not on my PC). Have you tried it? It finds mostly nothing of what I'm looking for and if, it finds smaller files then Album Art Downloader. I wouldn't complain, if MC would do a good job here. And it's a great software ...

The Album Art Downloader has configurable sources, while MC does not. The developers are very set on using the YADB to store cover art. If there isn't something there that you think should be included, do everyone a favor and Run "Cover Art->Submit to Internet" after you've updated your art. As a boon, if you ever need to redownload the cover art in the future, MC will be able to do it automatically from the YADB.

I do always upload the cover art that I have downloaded from other sources. And as said already in other posts: I don't find my uploads there ... even so they are better in quality and larger in size ...

Here is a correction to my above statement, that MC does not find coverart I've uploaded. It is true and not true.
MC simply works different than I thought it does.

- When I have album art on my local disk assigned to the album and search the internet obviously MC does not further look up the internet because it assumes I have cover art and don't need new or better one. (This is different to I thought it would work and I think MC should continue to search and offer alternatives from the internet).

- When I delete my cover art from the library and also delete the local file and then search again cover art is found. Still there is more and mostly better cover art found with album art downloader

- when I add the (better) cover art from album art downloader to the respective album and upload this to the internet it's uploaded. And after I have deleted the cover art from my library and local file system I find the old (bad) cover art plus the good one I just uploaded.

This is not the best process of getting good cover art. At least MC should continue to search even if it finds that I have cover art already. Or am I missing something?

It will always look it up if you tell it to.

You can just select "Remove Cover Art" if you need to.

It uses a number of different sources. MC only uses YADB.

That is how it should work. Your upload does not supersede what is already in YADB. I believe there is a selection algorithm which chooses the "default" cover art by the number of downloads.

You are missing something. "Get from Internet" should always do a lookup on the selected files, even if they already have cover art.

So how do I tell MC to do exactly this? My MC doesn't. Or should it and doesn't?

What happens if you select your albums, right-click, and go to Cover Art->Get From Internet?

Mostly I see my own cover art file only.

However I recognized that I missunderstood the statement below the image: "Your library (also on server)" that this would be on my server. It seems this means on the internet server (why don't they say this clearly?)

I hav done a few more tests an recognized, when "the internet" has more than what I have, that this is displayed and I can pick the better result. So yes it works to get cover art from the internet. Still MC does not offer the best sources to pick from and using Album Art Downloader most of the time is realy required if you want good album art.
