I am running Media Center in a server / client configuration. Every day I download new videos from bong.tv. These videos are put in the download directory that Media Center 'monitors'. I am really frustrated to see how long it takes for the server to pick up these downloaded files. Even after 4+ hours the server won't pick up the new files. If I run the import manually I can see that Media Center picks them up. I am considering writing a power shell script that pushes the import buttons for me every five minutes, so I don't have to do it manually.

Sage TV and Beyond TV were both significantly better in that regard. I could put downloaded videos into my monitored directories and the new files were picked up in about 2 minutes max.

This is my 3rd post about runnig Media Center in a client / server config where I have issues. It would be great to see these scenarios to work much better

I've never had issues with this. Normally my auto import picks up the new files within a minute or two I think. I'll test it more thoroughly over the next couple of days as I add more albums to my collection.

Just to be certain. You monitor and import the files on the server, right?

Check your auto import settings.

Yes, I have configured it on the server and auto import is configured for the folders that I am using to put in my new downloads. I'd say a good indicator of the correct configuration is that all I have to do is to 'run auto import now' from tools->import in order to pick up the changes which always works.

Please note that auto import will eventually pick up the new files automatically, but it takes a really long time. It's clear that it always takes at least more than 4-6 hours since I download new files pretty much every day. My downloader runs automatically and is typically done around 4 - 6PM yet the new files don't show up the same day. They will normally show up automatically the next day, so I don't know exactly how long it actually takes.

The files are not stored on the server where Media Center runs and hence auto-import is configured to import files from a UNC path such as \\server\shows\bong. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Is there anyway I can see if / when auto-import is running? Trace file  / logging or similar?

Is the server Linux based?

The 'server' that is running MediaCenter is Windows 7 and the video files are on a SBS 2010 (Server 2008 R2)

I mapped the share that contains the downloaded videos to a drive letter. I then changed auto-import to import the files from the mapped network drive and stopped using UNC shares for auto-import. After that I dumped a few test videos in that share and now auto-import picks up the new files within less than 2 minutes.

That's nice. I've been using mapped drives my self the last year or two. And it seems to be generally less troublesome than using direct UNC paths. Strange that it would take so much longer time to import though. I did not notice that in my UNC path days....
